For some of us, every day is dance day, but UNESCO has decided that this Sunday, April 29th, is International Dance Day 2007 for everyone.
"Oh, my sainted aunt!" you cry. "How to manage the anticipation? The pressure! How can I avoid messing this one up like I did Secretaries Day, or that one Mothers' Day in 1986?" (Shudder.) "I swear, I honestly thought she liked macaroni art."
Don't you know it? Dance Umbrella of Ontario is anticipating your needs and exceeding your expectations with Dancing in Dundas Square. It couldn't be more clearly named or easier to find. All you have to do is show up at Yonge & Dundas this Sunday, any time between 1 and 5 p.m. to be treated to performances by ten of Toronto's favourite local dance outfits, and free classes, including a run-through of the steps to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." (Are you sick of zombies yet, Toronto?)
COBA, Company Blonde, Zata Omm Dance Projects, Collective Heat, OIP, Baila Boogaloo; they'll all be there and then some. Who knows… if you're lucky, maybe there will even be live instruction on How to Dance Properly.

And you could see the new break-dance comedy with Jamie Kennedy as well... ;)
Yes, I'm hoping to have some commentary about that one up soon as well, as Toronto's own Ms. Mighty is in it. (She's on the meanie rival crew. You can see her looking badass in the trailer.)
I got all excited thinking this was about mass participatory dancing at Dundas Square. My shoulders fell when I read it was about watching dance performances. Which is still good, but how often do amateurs get the organized opportunity to do unorganized public dancing instead of watching others?
Oh well. I shall still continue my lone pursuit breaking out into dance on the sidewalk.
Don't give up yet. It's a mixture of spectating and participating, not just one or the other.
