Film Friday: An Army Of...

So, although we’ve only just spent a whole post gushing about Sprockets, we can’t really forget about the other excellent stuff that’s going on this week. The Images Film Festival closes this weekend, and we’ve been told Live Images 4: Quasar, tonight at the Music Gallery (197 John) at 9:30 p.m. is the hot ticket, as it features “an army of modified 16mm projectors and a quadraphonic sound system to envelop the audience in a pulsating array of light and sound particles.” Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, IMAX!

Not to forget the continuing ReelWorld Film Festival either, mind.

It doesn't feature an army of modified 16mm projectors, but people have some incredibly good words to say about Army Of Shadows, screening at Cinematheque Ontario this week (starting tonight at 6:30 p.m.) “This year’s best film,” according to Now’s John Harkness and a full five stars from Eye’s Jason Anderson. There are only four screenings, and it sounds unmissable.

It’s worth noting, though, that if you want something a little trashier (perhaps your appetite having been whet by Grindhouse) the Brunswick Theatre (296 Brunswick Ave.) is starting a series of “Grindhouse Saturdays” showing exploitation classics regularly beginning with a double bill of David Cronenberg’s horror flicks, Shivers and Rabid, starting at 8 p.m.

They’re also planning a screening of Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS. Classy!

Also opening this week: Sleeping Dogs, which we saw at TIFF 2006 and didn’t like very much (but didn’t hate as much as Now’s Andrew Dowler, clearly) After the Wedding, which is melodramatic and contrived, but stars Mads Mikkelsen and we rather liked it for what it was (Eye’s Adam Nayman doesn’t agree with us, however) and Disturbia, which looks like an incredibly shoddy Rear Window for teens (but is getting surprisingly positive reviews).

Finally, though it doesn’t relate to anything happening this week, our prayers have been answered with the revelation that David Lynch’s Inland Empire will be showing at the Royal starting May 4th. So mark your calendars!
