Love or loathe the spindly structure on the OCAD grounds, you'll have a chance to speak to one of the minds behind the Alsop North America creation tomorrow evening courtesy of Salon Voltaire.
Bringing together interesting speakers, good food and lively discussion, Salon Voltaire reprises the days of Enlightenment and encourages intellectual curiosity through a series of events. Starting off the new season is Gregory Woods, Director of SMC Alsop North America, and Adam Vaughan, City Councillor of Trinity-Spadina, discussing architectural design and urban planning in Toronto. Both topics are fraught with varying opinions and to join in the fray you can purchase tickets for $24 from the Salon Voltaire website or grab any remaining few from the venue at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St. West) before the 6:30 p.m. mingle-and-drinks or speakers on stage at 7:30 p.m.

The effect is amazing. Is this shot with a special lens or done afterwards?
i know! that picture is off the hook.
Cool post, but what a bleak, depressing photo..! Looks like post-apocalyptic Toronto.
shaunpierre - sorry, not sure how it's been done but i would assume an after effect with my limited knowledge.
garyc - thanks, but i think the photo offers the general mood that torontonians have with our current state of architecture - regardless if i agree or not. oddly enough, the cn tower seems to be a beacon of light in the dreary skies.
Wow, Leth keeps getting better and better.
That is HDR - it is shot with several different aperture settings to capture as much detail from an image as possible, then combined later.

It looks like the Cubic Cows from Jupiter have arrived and are landing on Toronto. Actually I have no problem with the OCAD thingy, other than the paint job.
kevin - thanks, i forgot about hdr but am always amazed by the results.
rek - i love the pixelated "table", it's the legs i'm less sure about. i have, however, heard many more comments against it than for it.
I'm sorry if its bleak, but as a student enrolled @ OCAD full time, let me tell you that with the stress and workload, its more than just a little depressing being there-- especially at this time of year.
I love the alien look of the school though.
OCAD's only terrible paintjob is in their HIDEOUS STAIRWELL.
The entire main stairwell is painted a gross yellow which is constantly defiled by angry students. :P
