Toronto Wins; Mice, Kids, Planet Lose

2007_04_27_kyoto2.jpgThe Tories unveiled their plan to fight climate change, which broadly speaking involves polluters paying, although not very soon or very much. Cue predictable environmentalist outrage, and Environment Minister John Baird pointing out that the Liberals didn’t even have a fake plan. Buzz Hargrove is pleased, though.

An unlicensed daycare in Riverdale was closed down after a child was injured there. An anonymous parent said that the kids in the centre were “healthy, well-stimulated, well-loved and well-fed.” Police apparently disagree.

The Financial Times named Toronto second after Chicago among major cities in its ranking of North American Cities of the Future. Toronto was touted for its low crime and affordable housing, but Chicago did better in the flying car and robot butler categories.

Doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital have succeeded in recreating human leukemia in mice, which will allow researchers to study how the disease progresses from start to finish. Good news for people; for mice not so much.

Also keep in mind the Tories plan uses 2006 as the benchmark year to lower emissions when everyone else in the world uses 1990. So a 20% reduction from 2006 levels are still 20% higher than 1990 levels.

The plan is also based on industry growth, so if we closed down an operational coal plant tomorrow, we wouldn't really be getting credit because that's not cutting emissions from the industries growth. The spin in this plan is dizzying.

I think the parents defence of the daycare speaks more to the difficulty they have in obtaining licenced spaces in the 416 rather than their joy at having 20+ toddlers supervised by 3 adults.

Maybe it's time new development in Toronto was accompanied by mandatory daycare spaces - I suggest the Trump Tower be first, to look after the Donald :)

When can we vote the Cons out? I'm surprised they haven't been yanked out by now. That makes me worry they actually stand to get a majority in the next election.
