Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

What's up with Facebook? It seems like all of a sudden, it's morphed from being a community dominated by scholarly geeks to being the first word on everyone's lips. The overnight success of the networking community is humourously exemplified in the above image by Toronto photographer Tom Purves, taken at a recent blogger get-together.

Of course, Facebook is just the latest online community, rising from the groundwork of MySpace and Friendster and Vox and whatever else. With so many virtual communities to manage, some of us have trouble keeping on top of our physical, "real-world" life.

Seriously though, will Facebook stick? How many times are we expected to register and fill out another online profile? Can't we just agree on one online community and stick with it? How about instead we just go out for some beers or a coffee? See you there.

(Waddya know... even Torontoist is victim to the Facebook clubbery. We have our own group that can be found here.)

I think everybody was longing to abandon the freedom of MySpace to be free from other people's terrible design choices!

Facebook is now the #6 site in Canada by traffic.

I think most people have also been leaving myspace due to the constant bugs in their system. Bugs of any serious kind seem absent on Facebook, not to mention the site runs a hell of a lot faster.

My sister bugged me for months to get a facebook page, and I finally did. But hasn't it been around for years and years?

It helps that they recently increased the access to facebook. For the LOOONGEST time it was restricted to US schools (and before that Ivies, and before that just havahd yahhd) but now everyone can join.

But for sure the major issue is that it's readable and you don't have the eye-gougingly bad design epidemic to myspace.

The fact that it was created by a decent kid from his Havahhd dormroom rather than a spam company also helps.

Yeah, a kid at Harvard and a friend willing to put out a million-plus dollar investment!
