The Daily Photoist: ROM ceiling
Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!
This morning, Toronto photographer ekati (Kate) reminds us to look up with this beautiful image of the grand rotunda entrance ceiling at the ROM. This mosaic is truly a sight to behold, and here it's been captured in all its shimmering glory. (The shimmer is caused by thousands of cut squares of imported Venetian glass that make up the mosaic, which was contructed in 1933.) Since this ceiling is, in actuality, a dome, it's been impressively rendered as a flat image in this photograph.
We can only hope that when the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal galleries open in June that they include similar majestic works with such attention to detail, especially considering that the main entrance to the museum will no longer be through this Queen's Park rotunda.
(By the way, ekati, your fortune has apparently come true.)

The main entrance isn't going to be there any more? I thought/hoped they had just moved it during the renovations and were going to restore it.
Where is the entrance going to be?
The ROM's new main entrance will be on Bloor Street, in the new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, when it opens in June. Entering it will certainly be an impressive experience too.
The former entrance in the Rotunda was just too small for the many people who will need to use it.
The Rotunda has been renovated and is now being used as a Cafe, and that entrance (now called the Weston Entrance) will be used for special events in the evenings. It looks better than ever.
