The BabyG and Jmon Show

2007_03_07BabyG.jpg
Every night, BabyG and Jay “Jmon” drive around Toronto, getting into trouble with a satellite uplink in a custom Hummer. The fledgling Canadian webcast network BlogTV doesn’t really seem to have much to do with blogs, but so far it has been strangely entertaining.
On every weekday night from midnight to about last call, the pair hit local hotspots like the Drake and Lee’s Palace, checking out listings they find in magazines. Then it gets interesting. If you have ever tried to find anything to do from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. in Toronto, this show is about you. The hosts proceed to abduct drunk strangers in their oversized car, visit sketchy 24-hour restaurants and reflect on their roles in this bizarre startup business. Beware, if you tell them where you live, they just might visit your apartment!
The BabyG and Jmon show airs every weeknight from 12 a.m.–6 a.m. To tune in, check out BlogTV.ca (registration required).

You’re kidding right. I’m curious why you would plug this. It sounds stupid. I’m a bit surprised, given that they drive around in a Hummer. Maybe I’m a square.

You forget to mention this is another costly fiasco from Alliance Atlantis, who were originally hoping that people would supply them with this kind of content for free.

As much as I love Hummer ads, I don’t think I will be watching this, judging by the 0/5 and 1/5 ratings it has.
Imagine driving around all night every night in a gas guzzler like that. What a couple of dicks.

I may be wrong (it wouldn’t be a first) but here’s what I’m imagining, Instant A-Hole, Just add Camera.
“Heyyyy, BabyG, Wooooooo” – “Par-TEEEEEE…Wooooooo!” –”Checkitout, BabyG, Checkitout, Woooooooooo, YEA!! Dude, check it out, nice Hummer, getit…dude…Hummer, like, Hey Baby, how bout a Hummer? Wooooooo!!!! Yo, BabyG, whatup, you wanna hang out with us, we’re goin’ for breakfast, break-fast, YEA, Wooooooooooo!! What? Naw? Huh? Yeah. Whoa, hey, Jmon, the Jmon…Jmon-ster….yo, Jmon, we be Jammin’…DUDE…PARTY, Woooooooooo…Dude, Yo, Jmom, you’re friend, BabyG…Dude, she is hot…Woooooo…Dude, No, Seriously ,is she sing–, hey, she’s not, like, you’re girl, is she? Dude, hey man, seriously, I didn’t anything, we cool? Wait, no shit, am I on camera? Checkitout, Wooooooooooo, ROCK, baby, yea, Wooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

  • Marc Lostracco

    Joe Francis, is that you?

  • Steve

Woooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (waving the obligatory Ronnie James Dio devil-horns while simultaneously flicking my tongue a’ la Gene Simmons, in a suggestive manner between my raised fore-finger and raise pinky. Because NOTHING gets the ladies in the mood like seeing me do that, tanked and spitting while I talk, at 3:30AM in a 24 hour diner. Oh yeah, I rock.

Alliance Atlastis rules and consistently puts out top quality product.
    /end sarcasm

  • brokenengine

    Same goes for Alliance AtlaNtis

I totally saw the job posting for this a few weeks ago… “company confidential” on mediajobsearch or something. HAH.
At least the launch party for BlogTV was good for a few free drinks and a webcam…

Ya, if it was just another pair of twats, I can see this being “stupid”. However, one half of the duo, BabyG, is a pretty amazing woman who likely has more life experience (read: travel, social work, party planning, mad travel, art projects at BurningMan, New Orleans rebuilding, participation in OM and Harvest, and a more recent focus on environmental fundraising -insert ironic Hummer comment here-) than most.
If anyone can do, it’s her – ‘it’ being the act of taking advantage of a ‘costly fiasco’ and running with it — the result: probable entertainment and dare i say even enlightenment.. or, alternately, ridiculous fun and debauchery at 4am on a Tuesday (and what’s wrong with that?). I could be very wrong, but I like to try to see the potential for positive =) No comment on Jmon, I don’t know anything about him =)

Alliance Atlantis is now CanWest Global. Sigh. Let’s count the weeks until Showcase becomes Sun TV 2: Television Without Standards.

And now, she’s got a Phd in Partee-ology.
Really, does one have to be well read, well travelled and “wordly” to drive around at 4AM in an $80K vehicle that gets 6MPG with a camera asking a bunch of drunk people, “So, Hey, guys/ladies what’s up? Where you guys comin’ from tonight? Later on, we’re gonna show you who has the best pancakes, Yo, this is BabyG, Peace!.”

  • Brad

So, Hey, guys/ladies what’s up? Where you guys comin’ from tonight? Later on, we’re gonna show you who has the best pancakes…
    – Ummm I think there is NO shortage of innane content on TV… examples including Hummers and other large ‘Earth Fuckers’: Blind-Date (a top rated show), Innane comments from Drunken fools: Speakers Corner, Completely innane commentary from people acting like a bad highschool bitchfest: Survivor.
So BabyG and Jmon don’t have a high ‘bar’ to get above… The probably will be entertaining (which is the point), and they will be WAY better than a late night infomercial.
So, the WHOLE point of this is to be entertaining… It’s a business, and BabyG&Jmon have he job to tool around in a bad-ass vehicle, trying to get people to say/do entertaining things at 3:am… Maybe they won’t… (Then they won’t be doing the job for long…) But I, for one, plan on checking them out… They will be worth the watch. I’ve seen lots of strange shit at 3am on the streets of Toronto… and I didn’t have an attention attracting device like a Hummer.
In the end, this is for the market to decide. If BlogTV doesn’t get viewers, they won’t be doing the show…
