Stephen Harper's Jet Hypocrisy, Docks Gets Its Game Back, Stephen Hawking Goes Weightless

harper.jpgOpposition parties are crying foul over Harper's use of military jets. After accusing the Liberals of overusing the jets for personal business during their time in government, Harper used one to fly his son to Toronto for a Leafs game. Pot, meet kettle.

A lethal bacterial strain common in hospitals has hit Mississauga. According to the article, C. difficile is spread through fecal matter. We don't even want to know what's going on in our hospitals these days.

The Docks has been given its liquor license back. It may not be everyone's favourite venue, but few establishments go to such great lengths to please everyone. A new $5 million sound system? Posting a sound guard on the island during concerts? People need to understand that living next door to one of Canada's largest cities just might mean a little noise now and then.

Stephen Hawking will make a zero-gravity flight in April. How cool is that? Aside from experiencing zero-gravity, Hawking has a $200,000 space flight ticket in his pocket, thanks to Sir Richard Branson.

The Raptors, despite being dead to Stephen Colbert, breezed to a 106–90 victory over the Houston Rockets last night. Take that Colbert!

Stephen Harper is my favourite person ever.

I thought it was dumb when Harper criticized the Liberals for using the Challenger jet, and I think it's dumb for the Liberals to criticize him now (though it's fair to point out that his initial criticism was dumb). The Prime Minister is the Prime Minister -- when he travels, it's not safe for him to fly commercial -- nor is it safe for the other passengers who are endangered by flying with a target -- so he has to take government aircraft. The RCMP won't permit him to fly commercial, even if he's flying to Grandma's for the weekend, not on official business. A pleasant perq, but one that's necessary. It's a nice gesture that the Conservative Party reimbursed the Canadian Forces for some of the cost, but I'm not sure that's necessary. The cost of safely transporting our head of government, EVEN IF HE IS EVIL (!!!!!!) , should be borne by the government. If Jack Layton or Stephane Dion were in power, I'd say the same thing.

The problem isn't Harper's use so much as that the CPC are shortchanging the govt of canada in how much they pay for it.

This is exactly why I love that the Toronto Island Airport remains inspite of the CommunityAir protests to the contrary.

mark-> so they shouldn't bother paying anything, just like the Liberals did? at least they're making an effort

Is anyone going to attempt to justify the use of government aircraft to fly his son around?

Josh - Is there a reason Harper's son can't fly commercial?

Also, aren't the Islands in Toronto and not next door to it?

Yes, the Islands are technically in Toronto. However, the Islands are as much a part of the "city" as Poland is. That's exactly how Island residents seem to want it. I was poking fun at them.
