“Songtario” Warms Hearts

Check out the video for “Songtario” by Henry & Clare before you notice people humming it on the streetcar tomorrow. With a catchy electrohook and snowy T-dot landscapes, it’s hard not to get a little verklempt when musician Elliot Caroll laments, “I’m still alone in a city of 2.6 million.”

“Songtario” gets Torontoist’s stamp of approval. Now let’s snuggle.
Thanks to Pete for the tip.

this is really, really, very bad

Speaking of pixieish Toronto singers in wintery, low-budget music videos featuring city landmarks, here’s one I did (I had only $500 and two hours, so don’t expect Spielberg) for Lights. Sorry about the sync — YouTube sucks with that.
Also check-out Platinum Blonde’s “Not In Love” video, shot in Nathan Phillips Square, and for more retro action, the video for “Rise Up” by Parachute Club, parading down Front Street by Roy Thompson (couldn’t find a link). That was back when Toronto wasn’t embarrassed to play itself on TV.

Nothing to get really excited about, poor execution, bad music and off-key singer. In the end, nothing to be proud of… Come on ToIst, you can do better than that!

this is horrible. regina spektor ripoff

  • atomeyes

    its really not overly good.
    but she tries hard.

I don’t know what you guys (previous commenters) are smoking but obviously it is pretty good to remove you so far from reality.
I quite enjoyed it. Good job, Torontoist.

  • brokenengine

You’re kidding about this, right? It’s cute, but not all that well done, and the song is pretty uninspired. Certainly won’t be stuck in MY head, in fact I’ve forgotten most of it already.

  • Sleepy Jean

I’d like to snuggle with Karen.
There. I said it. I was holding that in for months.

woah…i was going to say something about how henry & clare wouldn’t have gotten so much attention for an ok song if the singer wasn’t a young and attractive woman. and then everybody else decided to go to town! hey, it isn’t such a bad song – not jaw-droppingly good, but not awful – for AN 18 YEAR-OLD. unless she didn’t write it, produce it, sing it, or do anything for it other than pose for the video and myspace pictures. c’mon, how good were you at song-writing when you were 18? how good is anybody? most people suck. she ain’t so bad. over-hyped, yes, but not really really bad.

  • Gloria

I like to believe that Torontoist has better editorial criteria than “hey, not bad for their age.”

  • andrew

yes, gloria, because that was the only criteria i proposed. let me reiterate, not an awful song, not great; and this is regardless of the age or experience of whoever composed and performed it.

  • Gloria

Well, if your point wasn’t “isn’t such a bad song … for an 18 YEAR-OLD” or “how good were you at song-writing when you were 18?”, then I honestly am sorry.
Torontoist, just in case you’re looking, I have a song I wrote when I was four. I gotta say … it rhymes pretty well. In most places. Anyway, it’s about candy! Who doesn’t love candy?

  • MarkMedley

Am I the only one who really likes this? It must suck to lack the capacity to enjoy. Ah well.

It’s frustrating because there’s a really great song in there somewhere, but, my God, is it overproduced. I would love to hear it with several of the layers (and some of the syllables) stripped.

  • Carly Beath

I love it. There’s one line where there are, similar to what Jonathan said, about 5 times as many syllables as their should be and that bothers me. The rest is super.

  • andrew

Honestly, the best part about the song is the slightly offkey singing, or too many syllables, and slight over-production. My main beef, Gloria, was that cute and young is more likely to get yr video up on Torontoist or anywhere for that matter than really well thought out lyrics and good song structure but i recanted when everyone else decided to take a dump on it. But I’ll listen to Henry & Clare on repeat for hours and consider it a treat compared to way over-produced, auto-tuned, generic music that band Fidget puts out. Or what’er faces, um…crap, um, Remainameless. Hey, points for tryin’ but H&C kicks their ass with arrangement and composition.

Whoa, I love this song! I mean, this coming from someone who doesn’t really listen to this kind of music, ever, if this fits a certain type of music, I guess.
Anyway, the intro would make a really good breaks remix.

  • Jonathan Poop

I liked it. Enjoy it. It’s all enjoyable.

Girls got talent. Potential. She’s going places. This song has something unique- there is life to it, energy.
