Fresh off their massive St. Patrick's Day celebration, Steam Whistle is throwing another bash tonight, but this time in support of a much nobler cause than getting smashed and pretending you're Irish for a day.

Tonight the doors to the Roundhouse (255 Bremner Boulevard) open at 8 p.m. for sets by Woodhands, Modern Boys Modern Girls and These Electric Lives in the first installment of Steam Whistle's Unsigned music series. It's $5 at the door, and every penny goes to supporting the Regent Park School of Music.

The school is an independent non-profit organization that offers after-school music lessons to kids from Regent Park. Students take classes in music theory, violin, percussion, piano, voice, guitar and more. With 200 students and 150 more on the waiting list, it's clear that this popular program is deserving of some extra funding. That's precisely why Modern Boys Modern Girls signed on for Unsigned.

"All of us are self-taught musicians, so our 'training' came in the form of spending lunch hours in our high school music rooms, banging out rock tunes on Hondo International classical guitars, playing the half-tuned beat up pianos, the drums in band class," says guitarist Akira Alemany. "We're happy to raise money so that kids can equally terrorize their instruments in school."

Tonight's acts span the dance party spectrum, from dreamy electronic music (Woodhands) to co-ed synth rock (Modern Boys Modern Girls) to electro-rock buzz band (These Electric Lives). DJ Phil Villeneuve will keep the tunes coming between sets. It's the perfect reason to throw on your dancing shoes on a chilly Wednesday, all while raising money for a good cause.
