Putting The Fun Back In Fundraising

03_03_2007hunterfundraiser.jpgHunter S. Thompson is notorious for his alcohol abuse, his gun collection, and most importantly for developing a new style of journalism called Gonzo. This new style blended fact and fiction and often removed objectivity by placing the author in the starring role.

When the Ryerson Review of Journalism needed to raise funds for its upcoming issues, they decided to throw a party, and once again place Hunter S. in the starring role.

Decadent and Depraved: the fundraiser features an actor reading the story that kicked off Hunter's career, entitled The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved. Costumes are greatly encouraged. Throw in raffle prizes, pool, cheap drink specials and a BYOE (bring your own ether) policy, and it's bound to be a good time.

The Ryerson Review of Journalism is the magazine put-out by graduating Ryerson Journalism students in the magazine stream. Started in 1984, its mandate is to be a "watchdog on the watchdog," reporting on journalists and trends in journalism around the world.

The fundraiser takes place exactly two years and two weeks after Hunter S. Thompson's death. It starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at Raq-N-Waq. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. For more information or to buy tickets, you can email j2fong@ryerson.ca or call 416-858-3291.
