March 8th marks International Women's Day each year, though it's sadly not yet a national holiday in Canada, as it is in a few countries. But official holiday or not, there are still a tonne of events happening in Toronto to mark the occasion. Here are some of Torontoist's best bets for celebrating feminism this week:

Today

The National Film Board and Amnesty International present a free screening of Killer's Paradise, a documentary about the unsolved murders of thousands of women in Guatemala, at the Royal Cinema (608 College St.) at 7 p.m.

The Toronto Women's Bookstore (73 Harbord St.) hosts an evening of music, spoken word, theatre and Chilean food at 7 p.m. Proceeds will go to the human rights group Women's Co-ordinating Committee Chile-Canada.

Ladyfest Toronto will be running again in 2007 and organizers are looking for volunteers to help out with the music and arts event. Check them out on MySpace and then head out to the volunteer meeting at 8 p.m. at the Victory Café (581 Markham St.).

Friday, March 9

For those that like their activism in party form, Goodhandy's (120 Church St.) presents Browngirlworld 7. The celebration of "trans guys/drag kings, queer/gay women and their supporters" features spoken word, a burlesque performance by CoCo La Crème of Skin Tight Outta Sight, a drag king show by Milo de Milo and beats by DJ Jola. Tickets prices run on a sliding scale of $8-12 and can be purchased at the aforementioned Toronto Women's Bookstore.

Saturday, March 10

The 29th Annual International Women's Day March and Rally on Saturday, March 10th is the big event. The rally starts at 11 a.m. at the OISE Auditorium (252 Bloor St. West). It's followed by the march at 1 p.m. and a fair at the Ryerson Student Centre at 55 Gould St. from 1:30-4:30 p.m. There will also be a Women's Open Mic at Ryerson's Ram and the Rye pub happening at the same time as the fair. The theme for this year's event is "Raise Your Voice! Raise Minimum Wage!" so you've got double the reason to show up.

The New Acropolis philosophy society hosts a workshop facilitated by female philosophers on the topic "Who Are We As Women?: The many faces of feminine power." It takes place at the Locke branch of the Toronto Public Library (3083 Yonge St.) at 1 p.m. and admission is $15 ($12 for students). Tickets can be reserved in advance on their website.

What's the Frequency, Campus? Mini-edition

Ryerson's CKLN 88.1 FM is broadcasting special programming until Sunday in honour of International Women's Day. Today's topics include a discussion on how gender factors into the production of radio art and experimental music (2 p.m.) and an interview with poet Dr. Afua Cooper (7 p.m.). On Saturday, the station will broadcast live from the march, rally and fair, starting at 10 a.m. Check the IWD page on their site for the full listing.
