Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!
This abstract image comes courtesy of Torontoist Flickr pool member sevennine (Marc Hodges). It's a pic taken on the inside of that gigantic inflatated structure on the Varsity Stadium field at Bloor in U of T. There's plenty of space inside -- the structure is one of the largest of its kind in Canada. All winter long, intermural teams are using the new indoor space for a host of sports and games -- indoor soccer, field hockey, ultimate frisbee, flag football and lacrosse. There's also a driving range open to the public.
It seems like a cool way to use a seasonally dormant playing field. The photographer sevennine says it best in his caption:
Every Monday night (during the winter) I play ultimate at the bubble that covers the new Varsity Stadium field at U of T. It's nice to finally have an indoor venue that's in the heart of downtown TO. It's probably the best venue in the GTA, good light, easy to access and a good field.
The photo itself is pretty interesting with those vaulted archways and upward lighting. It comes across like a gothic archway (in a bouncy castle, mind you). There's something very organic about this photo -- it's plant-like and reminiscent of falling water.
The ambitious Varsity Centre rennovation project is still underway -- the bubble being one part of it -- with various phases reaching completion this summer and the entire project complete in 2008. Hey, FIFA has already certified their new "grass-like" soccer pitch. (Of course haven't we've just spent millions on a new stadium for pro soccer? Do we need two?)

You question whether or not Toronto needs two FIFA certified fields is that important, you should really be looking at the quality of the fields in the GTA. Toronto needs more high quality fields. I play a lots of ultimate frisbee (year round) and due to the field shortages (and the fact that we have to share fields with other sports leagues) we end up playing on most of the fields across the GTA and I can tell you from first hand experience, on average, they suck.
How does Toronto (and Canada) expect to successfully compete on an international level when the quality of the current facilities suck. It's not just international competition either, if the goverment wants to promote a healthy/active lifestyle, then give us the facilities to do so! Especially considering we live in the largest city in Canada, we should easy access to good fields/failities.
I know that not everyone agrees with the complex, but I'm all for it and would like to see more spring up around the GTA.
Sorry for the rant... but that felt good.
