Patrick Watson Ticket Giveaway

patrickwatsonsm1_6820.jpgIf you've never heard Montreal's Patrick Watson, you'd likely assume that he's a solo artist. You'd be partially correct, however, Patrick Watson is also a band. It can be a bit confusing. What's not confusing, though, is that this band is on it's way up in the music world and are beginning to turn heads. Their debut label release Close To Paradise (Secret City Records) has been drawing all kinds of attention, from a Juno nomination to a song on Grey's Anatomy (upcoming episode), and even a spot opening for the late, great James Brown. Watson's vocals have repeatedly been compared to another late, great, Jeff Buckley -- soaring and melodic, but with a twist of pop and a generous heap of classical piano. We suggest listening to the album with headphones on.

Patrick Watson is in town this Friday, February 16 at the Rivoli, and courtesy of The Musebox we have a pair of tickets to give away, along with a CD and poster. Want 'em? Be the 4th person to email carrie@torontoist.com with the title of the band's first video, and the prize is all yours.

Check out some of Patrick Watson's songs on Myspace, and while you're at it, fire up their new video -- it's pretty sweet.

I had the misfortune of seeing Patrick Watson et al live in Toronto last year, opening for another band. Their music is harmless enough, sort of like an extra-boring version of Coldplay. It's Watson's stage personality that I found repulsive. From his inane attempts at banter with the audience to his ridiculous rockstar emoting at the piano (complete with Ray Charles-style rocking with his eyes rolling back in his head) it was painful to watch.
