The Daily Photoist: Venus Florists

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It’s our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

Signs like the one above, captured by Torontoist Flickr pool member bitefight, are disappearing all over the city, which is sad. Who doesn’t love them? There’s something about the proportional imperfections in the hand-painted letters that coverys far more character than a sign in neon or generated on computer.
Few people work as professional sign painters anymore, and many of these old signs are showing their age. To be fair, it’s the rust and decay and the yellowish cast on this photo that got the attention of our Daily Photoist selection committee, but this is a sign not long for the world.
In this photo’s Flickr description, bitefight adds, “If I ever see it in the garbage, I will need help carrying it to my apartment.” Hey man, just give us a call.

Old signs are one reason I love Winnipeg. That old town had its economic heyday long ago and never really had a revitalizing boom like Toronto’s in the 70s and now again. Lots of old buildings and old signs that nobody’s ever found profitable enough to tear down or renovate.

The sign for Stephanian Drugs (on College) was being repainted the last time I saw it. I’d always meant to take a picture of it. I love how the whole thing only has holes for 5 lightbulbs, scattered randomly over the word DRUGS.

That is a damn ugly sign. Why you are romanticizing it so.

Why? Well, free your mind, and your ass will follow, as George Clinton says. It’s no more ugly than a woman with natural/unenhanced/unwaxed physical attributes. It’s *real*.
Actually, the whole Venus Florists setup is like the (pre-gentrification) Czehoski of Roncy–note not just the sign, but the horizontal/vertical panelled veneer above the storefront, among other things. Look, if they can restore the El Mocambo sign, they can maintain this one, even in the event that its raison d’etre no longer exists–it’s *that* perfect and emblematic of the neighbourhood.
It’d be interesting to know who designed the sign, which is similar to a few now-gone examples on the Motel Strip (Eagle’s Nest et al). Vancouver’s had a good neon heritage/history thing going; Toronto needs the same…

Honest Ed’s still uses old-time hand letterers for their signs.
You used to be able to go to a technical school and learn how to do it, one of Toronto’s colleges used to offer the course but I can’t remember which one.
