The Daily Photoist: Flat Iron

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It’s our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

This unique viewpoint of the our city skyline comes courtesy of Torontoist Flickr pool member Ride My Pony (Charles Bodi). In fact, we couldn’t remember ever seeing Toronto from this angle before, which says a lot, as some of us used to work in a building right in the middle of this shot. Through the magic of HDR — a technique that allows you to mix different exposures of the same photo — we’re presented with an almost cardboard-cutout view of Front and Church and The Esplanade. We love how much the colours in this photo shout WINTER without any of the usual clichés.
Rumour has it that the building directly south (behind) the Flatiron is scheduled for demolition and will be replaced with a gigantic condo tower. It wouldn’t be Toronto without some pending condo project, now would it?

It looks like a painting of early-industrial [some European city] almost.
But what’s this about a new condo? Let’s protest! That building, whatever it is, is critical to something or other!

  • Chris Taylor

The building behind that will get knocked down for the condo is of a much more recent (i.e. non-historical) vintage. It is not a protected 19th-century warehouse-cum-retail outlet like the 45-49 Front St East block visible in the photo.
It has been painted up to resemble its older neighbours but it’s basically an undistinguished ’60s-’70s concrete piece of crap housing a book vendor temporarily.

I’m usually a hater of this whole faux-HDR thing, but this actually does look like a painting, or at least some antique hand-tinted postcard.
