The Beat Goes On

In our last report on Drum Circle, Toronto's weekly celebration of drum and dance, one commenter lamented, "Its going to be a looooong [sic] winter without it...:(" Fear not, faithful reader, for the beat goes on.
Attentive readers may remember that the dreadlocks, wooden beads, glowstick poi and djembe drums that have come to characterize the event were causing grief for a pair of older residents near Trinity Bellwoods, claiming the event held in the park's gully was creating excessive noise. One evening two summers ago, the circle found itself in a very Cherry Beach-like situation, and was exiled from its ancestral home by the police. Through an act of remarkable finagling and fundraising, the group was able to secure permits to have Trinity Bellwoods jams once a month, setting up base in Queen's Park the rest of the Tuesdays.
Organized via a mailing list and website, the group found themselves with a major dilemma for continuing in the winter: drum for free in the Dance Cave but exclude under-19 participants, or colonize the Funhaus but charge admission. A fine balance was struck: the majority of winter drum circles are 19+, with the occasional alcohol-free, all-ages evening at places like Sprouts, pictured above. There is no word yet on whether the event will attain cultural status like Sunday Tam Tams in Montréal, but there is expected to be a drum circle every Tuesday for the rest of the winter.
The gathering returns to the Dance Cave next week. Grab your didgeridoo!

Vom.
I really thought I escaped drum jams when I moved out of Thunder Bay and away from scores of people who owned their own drum.
I can't believe they followed me here...
wtf is wrong with you people?
seriously, toronto is full of complete dipshits.
Wrong with which people? The commentor, or the people in the photo that looks like it should be in The Onion?
"Area woman drops beat as though it were hot, but not so hot as to harsh her mellow"
"Area woman never told studded belt, dreads 'not a matching set'"
"Hippie Thunderdome: ThinBeard Vs. 'Vegan' T-shirt"
Wow. There's just so much wrong with that photo, but it's late and I'm too tired to try for more bad jokes. It's like a Where's Waldo, except Waldo is an awful urban hippie, and instead of hiding, he's EVERYWHERE.
Damn. Another blow for the "White People CAN dance" campaign.....
Yup... this drumming thing is catching on. The "drummers in exile" events are really popular, especially in the summer.. IT was nuts at Queens Park and Bellwoods - but it is by no means the only DC - I know of several in the T.O (Sunnyside on Sundays in the Summer is a good one). Basically, a lot of the ppl are strange YET interesting to talk to if you giv'em a chance; so get used to it... seems african/latin drumming is here to stay.
HAHAHA yeah, what they said. God Gregg, thats funny!
I'm in that photo. We had a whale of a time.
