We here at Torontoist don’t cover Emily Haines nearly enough, do we? Okay, so maybe we do — which is why, instead of going into a detailed account of her show Saturday night at the Danforth Music Hall, we’ll just say that it was a lovely hour of mellow music from her new album Knives Don’t Have Your Back, and that we’re glad it was a seated show. Her voice is so soothing that it was difficult for some of the audience to keep their eyes open.
Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton are touring throughout the U.S. to the end of January, so if you’re disappointed that you didn’t catch her here, maybe this will be a good excuse to take that mid-winter trip.

    I was there, she was wonderful – so soothing. And it’s not often you get to hear an album played straight through like that. I went home and had the best night’s sleep I’ve had in months.

    Val — funny you say that…I was passing out on and off during each song. Not because it was boring, but because her voice is so calming, and the atmosphere was perfect. Thing is, after I took the photos I managed to find a in the front row, so I hope she didn’t notice! Ha!

    I tell ya, if I was there I would’ve had the same problem, but not because of her soothing voice. It can’t just be me…doesn’t anyone else find her solo stuff completely and utterly boring? Haines is great in Metric, absolutely fantastic in Metric, in fact — or at least a few years ago she was — but I can’t get into Knives at all.

    David – I’m with ya there. I gave it many listens and an honest try, but everytime I heard “bros before ho’s!” (from the terribly punny ‘A Maid Needs a Maid’) I postively cringed. I know many critics are praising her as a complex lyricist, but that line alone take the rest 10 steps back.
    I’m glad to see her showing diversity, but it’s just not my cup of tea.
