Anti-Art School Confidential?

anti-art_school2.jpgTonight marks the first installment of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School at the Cameron House. The event provides a night of drawing from the live model with a series of cheeky twists. Firstly, the model is not some random naked person, but rather a cabaret star dressed in appropriately Vaudevillian costume. And at this life drawing session, the art-making is accompanied by alcoholic beverages and groovy tunes, not to mention kooky contests (best incorporation of a woodland animal, anyone?) and flashy prizes.

Dr. Sketchy's was originally founded in New York by illustrator Molly Crabapple and has branches in San Francisco, Detroit, LA, Phoenix, Raleigh, Austin, Philadelphia, Melbourne, London, and Edinburgh. The "cabaret meets art school" responds to the question, "why can't drawing naked people be sexy?" Anyone who has ever sat in on a life drawing class has surely pondered this predicament.

Still, we wonder if drawing a semi-clad woman while getting your drink on truly warrants the "anti-art" tag. (Last time we checked this formula pretty much lays the foundations for modern art.) The Toronto Dr. Sketchy's website claims it rarely books male models, "as they don't draw the same crowd as girls do." Quite. But if you're looking for a raunchy, if not exactly revolutionary, good time and a chance to flex your rendering skills at the same time, dust off your sketchbook and head to the Cameron this evening.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School runs 8-11pm January 29 and the last Monday of every month thereafter. Cost is $8. Thanks to BlogUT for the tip and image.

"anti-art school", not "anti-art" I dig art with all my soul, but art school's another story.

Otherwise, lovely article.
