The Daily Photoist: 4:00

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

The images of Toronto photographer Natalie Brahan have a very distinctive look. Many of the photos are taken with toy and vintage medium-format cameras and then aggressively cross-processed. This technique imparts a nostalgic sense of place on the otherwise ordinary ephemera around the city -- traffic lights, parking signs, construction cranes, or the two locked bikes, pictured above. To quote the photographer herself, "I feel that the imperfect images that [toy cameras] often produce complement the unique character of the older neighbourhoods in the city."

And she's right. While walking around Toronto, we're guilty of hardly noticing the sort of random objects that are captured by her lens. But when looking though her photos, we're struck by how beautifully she's captured the everyday sights and happenings in our city. In addition to her Flickr stream, she maintains a regular photoblog called Luminescent.
