The Daily Photoist: Pinch? pinch? pinch? NO PINCH! NO PINCH! NO PINCH!

We're experimenting with a new daily photo posting. Each weekday morning, we'll pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

We intentionally left this photo by Robannz (Marc Robin) out of the weekly roundup so we could feature it here in The Daily Photoist. There's great textures and colours here -- especially the way the red and blue just pop off the page. And the human pincer hand is funny. It made us think of the head-crushing character from Kids in the Hall. And then we went off and watched Kids in the Hall DVDs all night and didn't do any Christmas shopping like we were supposed to. So thanks a lot Robannz -- for ruining Christmas!

Actually, the opposite was true. This photo, for being so focused on one small detail, wonderfully evokes a stroll along Spadina through Chinatown, and that, in turn, reminded us of our yearly tradition of eating Dim Sum on Christmas morning. (One year, a Christmas Day snowstorm liberated us from our family obligations and we found ourselves stuck in the city with no food in the fridge. Spending Christmas eating Dim Sum was such a treat we vowed to make it an annual event.)

The fact is, for lots of people in the city who don't believe in Santa, December 25th will pass not much different from any other day. Whether you plan on spending the 25th at home, going to the movies, or eating crab at your favourite Dim Sum restaurant, pass it merrily.

"For lots of people in the city that don't believe in Santa..."

I nearly spit out my coffee. Ha!

"Whether you plan on spending the 25th at home, going to the movies, or eating crab at your favourite Dim Sum restaurant, pass it merrily."

Hear, hear, Torontoist!

And a great photo. Reminds me of how we buy our crabs and leave them lying around in the sink while dinner is prepared. My brother and I used to poke wooden spoons at them.

Great shot! Your head crusing mention brought back a funny memory. My mother-in-law from the States was visiting and we were watching Gimore Girls with my wife.

In the episode, one of the characters started crushing someone's head - with the voice and all!"I'm crushing your head, I'm crushing your head, I'm crushing your head!"

I explained Kids in the Hall to her, and filled her in with the details about the Head Crusher.

Next morning we all went out for breakfast at The Beecher in the Beaches. Low and behold, who sits down at the table right next to ours???

Mark McKinney!
How cool is that?

Dave

Thanks for chosing my photo for the Daily Photoist! I'm glad that my picture reminded you of such nice memories :-) I honestly didn't think this photo would be noticed by anyone! Do you want a print? only 100$! hahaha, just kidding...(but honestly if anyone wants any of my photos in print (I might be having delusions of grandeur here, :-P), I don't mind doing that).

Does anyone recognize where the title for the photo comes from?

That Dim Sum tradition sounds very very tempting....

Does this have anything to do with the title of the photo?

heh, yep, that's where the title comes from. I laugh every time I see that commercial....fortunately it will never convince me to buy an SUV.
