The Daily Photoist: “Falling off would be a better shot”

We’re experimenting with a new daily photo posting. Each weekday morning, we’ll pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It’s our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!
2006_12_19-policehorse.jpg
We laughed and laughed at first sighting of Torontogal’s candid street image — our city’s finest checking parking tickets on horseback. It’s such an awesome capture. It contains all the elements of great candid street photography — a mix of the unexpected, the officer’s awkward pose, the resignation echoed in the horse’s pose (even a car that looks to have given up), and finally the background figures oblivious to the whole comic event.
EDIT: “Falling off would be a better shot” was the title that Torontogal gave her own photo. We’d argue that falling off wouldn’t have made a better shot — this image looks pretty good to us as is.
Of course, the image also raises the obvious question: Why do our police ride around on horses anyway? According to the Toronto Police Services Board, “Police horses are not merely ceremonial or decorative; they are a hard-working and vital part of the Service, critical in areas such as crowd control and missing persons searches.”
Apparently, they’re also good for parking enforcement in the badlands of Trinity Bellwoods.
Torontoist has touched on this issue before, and Spacing has offered up a convincing anti-horse argument. Sure, horses are cool and all, but why not bicycles, motorbikes, or Segways instead?
Thanks Torontogal for providing us such continuing amusement — and for provoking a short rant! On her Flickr site, there’s a should-not-be-missed collection of photos from an abandoned Buffalo orphanage. Outstanding work worth your attention.

    Hilarious photo! Made my day.
Weird, though, that Torontoist would simultaneously find the image amusing and warming and yet pan it. Do we have to dump a little on everything we like, just so we can assure ourselves we’re true blue Torontonians?

Actually Gloria, “Falling off would be a better shot” was the title that Torontogal gave her own photo. We just reproduced the title she chose to give it. I’d argue that falling off wouldn’t have made a better shot — this one looks good to us as is.

I was actually referring to reviving the cops-on-horses debate, which I found threw cold water on an otherwise funny photo.
The title itself I found pretty humourous, although I guess some people might interpet it as anti-cop.

Ha! Great capture. Nice way to start the morning.

Mounted units are intimidating, that is why they are used for crowd control duties. A person understands that a horse is not too likely to understand or be deterred by epithets or insults; a horse is going to go where it (or its rider) wants to go, so people are much more inclined to move out of a horse’s way.
A policeman on a bike, motorcyle or Segway doesn’t have quite the same effect, and is thus not nearly a useful as a crowd control device.
The entire argument against mounted units is predicated on the idea that their duties are the same as any other policeman, and that’s not quite accurate. They do parking enforcement (and so on) for the horses stay familiarised with the street environment. But their primary duty has always been crowd control, and that is where they excel.

These horses need to be endowed with more fluorescent markings. I just can’t see them when approaching from behind. Better yet, they should wear diapers made from reflective material.

The Buffalo orphanage flickr slideshow is awesome.

    Thanks to everyone at http://www.torontoist.com
The officer was placing the ticket on the dash and almost fell off the horse. He ticketed the car just ahead of this one and made the comment “You were hoping I was going to fall off all the way” My reply was…”Falling off would be a better shot” Hence the title.
Choosing my photo really made my day. My three teenagers think I am nuts because of my passion for photography. It is wonderful to see that my long hours have some reward.

After crabbing about the demise of a bike program – good for environment! – the blogtator badmouths police using environmentally friendly transport.
I think the scribbler should give their head a shake, although that might leave this blog a bit sparse.
