The Daily Photoist: The Great Hall

We’re experimenting with a new daily photo posting. Each weekday morning, we’ll pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It’s our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

There’s much we love about the work of Flickr user Uwajedi (Joel Charlebois). In his photo of Union Station’s Great Hall (above), the colours — indigo, gold, and chartreuse — are vibrant and intense, and his chosen vantage point really accentuates this grand space. But it’s the little details that really caught our eye — the shadowed crosses in the windows, the carved flourishes in the brickwork, the way the composition evenly balances out two archways.
Someday soon, Union Station will be redeveloped and who knows if this space will remain untouched. If you’re commuting through Union, don’t forget to look up. Photos like this one remind us what a beautiful place it is.

the great hall is an historic place, thankfully protected from most alteration by city bylaws.
hopefully the redevelopment will see new security guards, though, who are not nearly as lame as the ones on friday!
“what if we had a kkk rally in your workplace and we burned crosses?”
“whoa, buddy, we’re not the iPod klan and i’m glad you don’t know where i work!”

Wonderful idea for a daily feature. Also a great picture to start things off!

“What if we had a kkk rally in your workplace and we burned crosses?”
Because that really comes to mind when you see people dancing to “silence”. Good grief, security.

It is my honour to be featured in the first Daily Photoist. Thanks, Gary, for being so enthusiastic about my photography. I look forward to this new feature to the site, especially if future analyses are cultivated as thoughtfully as it was here.
