Free Turkeys For All, The Entertainment District Is Hella Dangerous, Toronto Cops Got Chub, Today In Politics...

2006_12_04HonestEds.jpgEd Mirvish: theatre tycoon, city hero and...turkey giveaway guru? People lined up overnight outside Honest Ed's for the 19th Annual Turkey Giveaway on Sunday. Now approaching age 93, Ed himself was sadly not in attendance, but son David Mirvish took over greeting duties.

City Homicide #64, if you're keeping track: 26-year-old Mississauga resident, Dennis Kwame Oppong, died after being shot in the head near Front and Spadina early Sunday morning. The victim had been convicted of second-degree murder as a teen, reports the Star.

Police are investigating a shocking murder-suicide this morning as a woman threw her 3 year old son off the Morningside Ave. bridge onto the 401 before leaping to her own death.

And speaking of police activity, a survey conducted to promote a healthy lifestyle in the force revealed that 65% of Toronto cops admit to being overweight. Insert doughnut joke here.

Toronto City Council meets tomorrow
for its first session with re-elected Mayor David Miller.

Meanwhile in Ottawa, the House of Commons prepares to meet with newly-elected Stephan Dion after his unexpected victory at this weekend's Liberal Leadership convention. Some predict an election to push out Conservative PM Stephen Harper as early as next spring.

Say what you will about the Liberals and Dion (who?), it's good to hear talk about getting rid of the Cons.

I am going to say that Front and Spadina is NOT the Entertainment District, as the papers are reporting. Imagine it for a minute: You are riding the Spadina streetcar and it arrives at Front St. Clubland? Hardly. There are a few condo towers, a car dealership, a Subway and some parking lots.

It's just like, whenever a homicide happens anywhere along Jane St. or Finch Ave., the papers say it happened at "Jane + Finch"

Yeah, but who's in the Front and Spadina area at 3 AM on a Saturday night if they're not coming from the entertainment district?
