Live Baby Live - Week of Dec. 4

The Deadly Snakes_0089

As the weeks draw closer to the holidays, we're seeing less and less shows listed -- which really sucks, because one can only take so much Christmas music...and we've already heard enough of it to drive us insane. Yeah, yeah, bah humbug. That said, it's quite possible we'll be checking out Twisted Sister's 'A Twisted Christmas' tomorrow. The vision of Dee Snider in full makeup and crazy hair, possibly wearing a Santa suit and singing 'White Christmas' is just too much to pass up.

Best bets for the week are all hometown kids, including Andre Ethier (of the now defunct Deadly Snakes), who will be performing his new solo work at Tranzac on Thursday, and The Meligrove Band at the Mod Club on Saturday, playing with the lovable Bicycles. We're all about supporting the local talent, and the above acts are well-deserved of the attention.

Any other shows you know of that can spice up our list this week? Let us know in the comments.

Danko Jones, Twisted Sister, and Dashboard Confessional, eh? Looks like I'll have no distractions from my work this week.

Zion-I and the Grouch lead off a hip-hop lineup at the ElMo tonight, $8. Jambase link for event.

Then for those who'd like to expand their Brazilian music horizons, here's another one for Wed., which I've put into point form for ya:

-Benefit Concert for Health & Education in Honduras; fundraiser with silent auction
-Live Brazilian Music by: Mulambo Groove & friends -- Forró with fusion, and Baquetas de Ouro -- authentic Samba group.
- Wednesday December 6th, 9pm Horseshoe Tavern (268 Queen St W)
$10 advance tickets, $12 at the door
(You can contact Lalo Porto for adv. tix.)

So, TOists, I'm curious: do you even care about such things as SF Bay hip-hop and live Brazilian music?

Oh, that's http://laloporto.com.

And all proceeds go to remote villages for school supplies, and to Paramedics for Children -- http://www.paramedicsforchildren.com/(last time this event took place the total raised was $1500 and the house was packed, contact Lalo for the PDF with all deets).

Hey Jonathan,

Quite honestly, it's got nothing to do with 'not caring'...it's more along the lines of not knowing. I try to be as diverse as possible when doing the listings, but things inevitably are off my radar completely. That said, I'd love it if you wanted to take a few moments to email me in advance whenever there's a really good show coming up that you think we might miss. :)

Jonathan,

No, I don't care. You have to impose limits somewhere if you're on a limited budget. I just can't afford to get into Brazillian music, or SF Bay hip hop, or many different kinds of music out there. Besides, with Ohbijou and the Adorables to look forward to, I'm ok. Thanks though.

Tuesday Dec 5th @ The Horseshoe

Your Band Sucks @12:00
The Dunes @11:10
(good buddies of ours, we share a rehearsal spot with them, and they're really great!)
Six Feet Deep @10:20
The Flints @9:30

Nu-Music Tuesday's = No Cover

Carrie, I didn't mean to imply you didn't care at all. I meant to ask the readers more than anyone. And I'll see what I can do for you about heads-ups. You know about good ol' Zoilus' list, though? I suspect you do. His main listing sources appear on that page, too.

andrew, point taken, but these are hardly expensive shows relative to the ones posted.

I'm curious who else on TOist, if anyone, wants to know (or, say, "cares for"* knowing) about such shows. That's all. No accusations intended. I like indie rock and such too, though I also support genre equality. (Not that y'all don't or anything -- just saying.)

(*You know, the way your Moms might've told you when you were a kid -- if you don't like something, just say "I don't care for it.")

Er, rather:

"Carrie, I didn't at all mean to imply that you don't care."

Hey Jonathan,

No worries. :) Some weeks are more diverse than others, and I try to find a balance when I can. Yep, I'm aware of Zoilus' list, and do check it weekly, but it's almost identical to Eye's listings. I have a whole huge pile of resources that I check for shows, which is why it takes so frackin' long to do this post each week!

Too... many... Jonathans.

You guys should use TypeKey on Torontoist. That way we can always tell you apart.

I'm not sure I understand TypeKey. Would we each have to have a unique name (i.e. include our last name or initial) or, if not, how would TypeKey help to distinguish us?

Not that I have any problem using my last name, but I suppose I could just do that anyway, without using TypeKey. Not that I have a problem with TypeKey, either.

It just makes it really clear who is who each time, that's all. You can just both just call yourself "Jonathan" (as Carrie is "Carrie"), or you can use your full name. It just makes it easier to differentiate, instead of having to use the URL to tell people apart (and nobody would be able to, for instance, imitate you).

Thursday the 7th is our (garbage!violence!enthusiasm!) CD Release show at Smiling Buddha. BEST VALUE! Us and 4 amazing bands for 5 bucks:

Iron Bitchface
The Sharp Tonges
The Blankket
G!V!E!
Hank and the Hank Collective

And it starts early. Doors 8, starts promptly at 9. (ps. there will be a special DJ Cyber Rap remix available for super cheap this one night only)

Party pooper.

not a *music* gig, per se, but the Scandelles (featuring Eye sex columnist Sasha van Bon Bon) are performing their "Who's Your Dada?" surrealist burlesque/performance art/dance/sketch/film thing on thursday and friday night at Buddies in Bad Times. I saw the first run of it back in the spring and it was greeeeeat. Really!

Your Band Sucks is so much fun to say...because it's true. Last time I saw them they were absolutely awful.
