Has Everyone Forgotten King Street? Violent Hockey Dad Fined $2000, Ye Olde Schooner Discovered At Bottom Of Lake Ontario

We've recently noticed that the so-called Entertainment District is experiencing a noticeable lull in, well...entertainment.

Once the home to a bustling nightly crowd of theatre goers, King Street has become a veritable ghost town of flashing lights since Pippin and Chicago closed a couple weeks ago. With the exception of John McDermott's Family Christmas on December 23, both the Royal Alex and Princess of Wales are black until The Phantom returns on February 21. Of course, Tennessee Williams' Orpheus Descending is playing from January 3 - February 11, but it just doesn't sound like the lighthearted Mirvish musical fun to get your granny out for a night on town, if you know what we're saying.

In more somber news, the parents of 11-year old Birunthan Nadarajah, the boy who died after falling through the ice of a Scarborough pond, are facing deportation back to Sri Lanka after failing to qualify for refugee status. You know, now might not be the time, CIC...

Bradley Desrocher was sentenced to only a $2000 fine and no jail time yesterday after courts ruled that his attack on minor league hockey coach Mark Teskey was out of character. Desrocher choked Teskey after the benching of Desrocher's son, much to the horror of the 9-year-old teammates and their parents.
Open discussion: was the punishment a little soft for Desrocher's inappropriate behaviour?

Avaste ye! Explorers have discovered the wreck of a large schooner on Lake Ontario which sank near Rochester, NY in 1849. T'is a fine vessel -- the mast still be standing tall over 150 years later.

Yeah, he should definitely have gotten a worse punishment for an unprovoked assault. At the very least mandatory psychological treatment for rage issues and a looong list of supplementary conditions for his release.

isn't that what Winterlicious is for? getting people to go to King Street after it's cold enough to use the PATH instead?

sigh. it ain't Broadway.

Isn't Chicago coming back with that guy from N'Synch?

I saw a small theatre production of Orpheus Descending in Chicago last year. It was amazing, really. I may try to see this production, now that I know.

Um, I think it's the Princess of Wales, but then again I'm not the copy editor.

It was an homage to me. *I'M* the Princess of Whales.

did we ever figure out if toronto's theatre district is indeed the second largest in north america or something?

"Isn't Chicago coming back with that guy from N'Synch?"

Kevin, from Backstreet Boys. The poster makes me giggle.

Those theatres will stay dark until Toronto betters it's tourism marketing. That means attracting the European and Asian markets, instead of sinking all of our tourism marketing dollars in the U.S.

D

I 100% agree with Dave. We already have a large amount of Asian and Eastern European tourists, but most are coming to visit family who have immigrated to Canada. That means they're more inclined to catch up over a home-cooked meal in Mississauga than go to the theatre. We need to attract pure TOURISTS, and Asia is our best bet.

"Hey Europeans, come to Toronto! It's just like your grand cities, but dirtier and smaller!"

What happened to that guy's kid is awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone but if the evidence is good that he's a Tamil Tiger then I'd prefer see him gone.
