The Making of a Medley
Today's cover story in the Star reminded Torontonians of something that is easy to forget: many of us are subjects of the Queen and even certain modern, western democracies like Canada still have a monarchy to gossip about.
With all the obsessive speculation and rumour-milling of a British tabloid, the Star reports on what has been considered "old news" in The Capital for a while now: the probable engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton. Perhaps the only update to this story is unmarried Kate's invitation by Her Majesty to join the Royal Family for traditional Christmas lunch at Sandringham, a sign of grooming for "Princess consort" status, and eventually the title of "Queen consort" if and when William becomes king.
Canadian media does not usually consider the Royal Family worth spilling ink over; the Monarchy is hardly on our minds save a few little reminders like our coinage and our performance at the Commonwealth Games. Even our British sister site has not mentioned Kate Middleton once. Could this signal a change? Should we send Toronto's finest photobloggers across the pond to compete with Europe's infamously rabid paparazzi? Perhaps we need a Buckingham Palace correspondent!
We, for one, welcome the change, and have always thought we could use a classy accent to accompany our spellings!

Actually Canadian media totally writes about the Royal family, have you seen the media hubbub when they visit. It's nuts.
I think all the national papers had an article on the prince's graduation today. We just don't treat them like celebrities, and thank god.
