Whoopadee Doo in Leaf Land!

2006_11_22_John_Ferguson.jpgThe Maple Leafs have announced that GM John Ferguson will get a one-year contract extension. It's not that we think he's doing a bad job per se (though, sorry to break it to you, no Stanley Cup this year) but we kinda find ourselves agreeing with the Globe's David Shoalts in saying, "So what?" It's a slightly more exciting announcement than, "Our team colours will continue to be blue and white or white and blue, depending where we are playing," but not by much.

They gave the guy a one-year extension - just like most people thought they would - and held a press conference as if exercising an option was something of wider interest to fans.

All we know is that our EA Sports NHL 2006 version of the Leafs is way more exciting right now. Our digitally-rendered team has gotten younger and faster and are looking like a lock for the EA playoffs. The GM has an axe hanging over his head (the owners have demanded that the team finish first in the conference OR ELSE!) but we think a strong playoff showing can placate them as legitimate competitors.

As for the real-life Leafs, the good news is that Mats Sundin should be back on the weekend..

According to Forbes, we still shell out like crazy for the Leafs anyway; they're the richest team in the NHL by far.
