Waiting for the PS3

Not even a month's worth of rain will deter people from waiting for the Playstation 3. Torontoist wandered down to the newly opened Best Buy and found a block-long line waiting for some 94 units. We even chatted with some of the people waiting outside. Read on for interviews.

2006_11_16waiting2.jpgJason, Waiting since 4:00 pm yesterday.

On staying warm: "Last night we got here early so we went down to the army store and got tarps and everything that could keep us warm, even tents. Tonight [Best Buy] won't let us have that. They're worried about people sneaking in."

On comraderie: "You just kinda meet people here in the line. You don't really have anything else to do."

Kunal, Ryan (with laptop) and friend, Ryerson students waiting since 8:00 pm yesterday.

On schoolwork: "We took breaks. Luckily my classes are here in this building." - Kunal

"I'm getting wireless. It's fantastic. I've got an essay due in a bit." - Ryan

Up the street at Future Shop things are a bit more tame.

Ivan, Eric, Paul, Bill, U of T students waiting since 2:30 am Thursday morning.

On what they'll do with the system: "We haven't decided what we're going to do with it yet. We'll see how the market goes."

On school work: "This is part of the sacrifice. Also, I've got a 'doctor's note.'"

HMV surprised some by saying they'd have units. But the gaming gods were cruel, and just minutes after we chatted with these gentleman they found out that HMV would not receive any and that they'd leave disappointed.

What a bunch of dorks... I wonder why their girlfriends didn't come out to wait with them... oh right!

There isn't a single product in the world that would be motivation enough to spend a night out in the rain. Perhaps if I were starving, and someone was handing out food, I'd find such discomfort palatable.

You're not hardcore unless you live hardcore.

:)

Um. There's a girl-dork right there.

Yeah, I think I'll wait for the shipment of units that don't melt discs, cause fires, or contain whatever other nasty technical glitches they didn't iron out in the race to get the PS3 into stores for Christmas. My PS2's good for at least another 6 months.

the only point of waiting in line is so you can hawk it on eBay for like 2 grand. duh

What happened to the tents? Is that what the guy was meaning -- that Best Buy made them take the things down? There was a a line of them along the sidewalk this morning.

If only these guys and crazy sports fans could get as enthusiastic about social causes instead.

Even with the ebay resale factor, they're still herbs.

Don't forget all those crazy people lining up in the rain to audition for Canadian Idol. That's a "social cause," right?

Nintendo's Wii launches on Sunday, but they produced and shipped so many there's no need to wait in lines all night like morons. And it costs less than half what Sony's charging.

If only these guys and crazy sports fans could get as enthusiastic about social causes instead.

I've been harsh with you in the past Marc but here's something we agree on.

That Kyle guy with the umbrella is a tool!

speaking as one of the girlfriends.
my dork brought home 5 PS3's and is selling them off for up to $2000 a unit.
Soon we'll have enough for a down payment on a house.
