The Last Minute Voter's Handbook

City Hall

Did David Miller do it for you the past three years? Did Jane Pitfield plagiarize your heart? Or did Kevin Clarke shout his way into yours? And what of the 30-odd other mayoral candidates, and that whole "choosing a city councillor" thing?

Well, after months of waiting, months of hype, and months of just wanting to get the whole mess over with, you finally get to vote. But what if you haven't chosen?

For those looking for last minute information, we've got two recommendations: Toronto Votes 2006, the city's official website for the election, is the quickest way to get answers to those holy-crap-I-have-to-vote-today questions, including a big FAQ and where to vote. who runs this town, meanwhile, does much of the same and then some.

More complete candidate biographies from a public space perspective comes from (surprise!) the Toronto Public Space committee's elections website, which breaks down and analyzes election issues like bicycle infrastructure, public transit, green space, street furniture, postering, and so on.

If you've got a bit more time to figure out who you're picking, there's always Spacing Votes and Eye Weekly's Elections Blog, both of which have been blogging about the whole thing for months.

No matter who you're voting for, or how you make the decision, we encourage every Torontonian to get out and vote today; you've really got no excuse not to. Polls open at 10 AM and close at 8 PM. Bring identification, your voter information card, and a conscience. Then pick your candidate, close your eyes, and let the exciting whirlwind that is democracy in action wisp you away. Or go back to work. Whatever.

the TPSC's election website is a disaster. It looks good but the content is hit-and-miss.

How can you compare a candidate (who can promise the sky) in the same way as an incumbent (who has a record of action/inaction)?

I love what the TPSC does but their election suvey came late in the game. Even City Idoler Desmond Cole, whiose campaign is run by TPSC honcho Dave Meslin, doesn't have a completed survey. Either it wasn't important enough to do or the survey methodolgy sucked. I suspect the latter,
