Reports confirm obvious, tax on empty hope ever more taxing, shots fired

police.jpgIs it still shocking if you're not surprised? It's been revealed that former police chief Julian Fantino's special task force on police misconduct was most likely formed only to avoid a full-scale public inquiry. It's all spelled out in a 2001 report that's being labeled "a blueprint for how to conceal from the public the malfeasance and the corruption that had been going on in the [Toronto police service]."

Golly. Another report confirms that neighborhood to neighborhood, green space, public safety, the availability of public transportation and proportion of income spent on housing all have an impact on lifelong health. Affluent neighborhoods house healthier people overall. Who'd 'a thunk?

Don't expect your weekly bingo scratch card to close the gap between you and your vivacious healthy friend from Rosedale, though. Fraud problems at the Ontario Lottery also extend to scratch cards.

A couple of neighborhoods to avoid as you downsize those dreams:
Not content to let Yonge Street hoard the dubious shine, a couple of thugs fired shots at cops during a high speed chase down the 401 after fleeing a strip club near Dufferin & Finch.

The health survey you link to does not in fact support the conclusion you draw ("Affluent neighborhoods house healthier people overall"). The results were obtained by asking people whether they viewed themselves as healthy. The conclusion then should be "people who reside in affluent neighbourhoods believe themselves to be healthier than people believe themselves to be in less-affluent neighbourhoods", which is hardly suprising and bereft of any practical value, as far as policy goes.

In fairness, this error has been made in every news report linking to the survey.

Anyone else notice something about the map on the front page of the Star today? A core of green "healthy" neighbourhoods, surrounded by a ring of "unhealthy", and then more green outwards to the mysterious realms beyond the horizon. I just thought the emergent structure notable.
