Greening the Waterfront

With Labour Day having come and gone, and autumn’s chill making too many appearances, Toronto’s waterfront is now just a memory of a summer fling. Who are we kidding… even during the summer the waterfront leaves much to be desired.
2006_11_13west8.jpg However, with the summer’s announcement of West 8‘s winning waterfront revitalization design, who knows… perhaps this time something will actually happen! Regardless, before breaking any major ground on the project, the waterfront’s future is still a hot topic of discussion.
This Wednesday it’s all about Landscape Architecture. The DX is hosting a symposium entitled
Investing in the Public Realm on Toronto’s Waterfront. Four landscape architects (Michael Van Valkenburgh, Claude Cormier, Ellen Neises and Adriaan Geuze) will be discussing their proposals for Toronto’s public spaces as each is heading the design of some of the waterfront’s major parks (Don River Park, Commissioners Park, Lake Ontario Park and the Central Waterfront respectively.) Further, they will discuss the role of landscape architecture in cultural identity and economic growth in today’s global world.

    The plan I really liked had those giant blue light pylons on piers at the foot of the main north-south streets. No doubt they’d be environmentally unsound (attracting fish and birds) but they’d be cool.

    Yes, that was the Norman Foster plan. I really thought that would win (despite/with) the glowing drops. I like how they were going to try and bring the water up into downtown through the slips. gold.

    I *really* hope they don’t actually do that giant maple leaf thing. How ridiculous and corny.

    I believe the maple leaf ponds were dropped from the proposal when it was accepted.

    The maple leaf ponds -were- dropped (I personally give credit to Brigitte Shim for that decision.) but you have to admit, it is a stunning image of ‘Canadiana’.
