David Miller Is Mayor for 4 More Years, Canada is Fossil of the Year, Hershey's Still Closed, Canadians Think National ID Good Idea, Air Guitar Shirt!
David Miller was reelected Mayor of Toronto with almost 57 per cent of the vote. Voter turnout increased to 41.1 per cent. Full election results for all wards are available on the Toronto website.
Miller used his acceptance speech to make his promises clear. Rather than use the new City of Toronto Act to add new taxes, Miller will be asking for 1 cent of the sales tax generated by Toronto from the provincial and federal governments. This may test the (currently) close relationship between Miller and McGunity. Miller also plans to put buses and streetcars on their own lanes, improve recreational facilities in poor neighborhoods, and have the waterfront parks finished by 2010.
The Canadian government has won the award for "fossil of the day" for contributing the least to climate control talks. Meanwhile, Canada was ranked 51st out of 56 on our climate change policies. We are only ahead of countries such as the U.S., China, and Borat's own Kazakhstan. Sweden, Britain and Denmark were near the top.
The Hershey's plant remains closed due to the salmonella recall.
In a study conducted by Queen's University, 53 per cent of Canadians considered national identification cards, complete with fingerprints and retina scans, a good idea. Former immigration minister Denis Coderre says it won't matter what the public thinks, "because at the end of the day it will be imposed by international standards."
Australian researchers have created an air-guitar shirt that will make real music when the wearer plays chords. Party on, dudes!

the turnout figure may be somewhat misleading as it doesn't account for the massive reduction in the voters list this year.
Wasn't the total mayoral poll down about 100,000?
Why haven't I seen any headlines saying, "It's Miller Time!" yet? I thought it would have been rather obvious/hilarious.
Toronto Sun, I'm looking in your direction.
Are you objecting to the fact that they didn't use the actual "it's miller time" slogan? 'cause they did draw his face into a beer mug; i thought that would have been enough!
Close, Karen: here.
I swear to god, I can predict Toronto Sun headlines like a psychic.
You just take the worst idea ever, get drunk while thinking about it, and then write a bunch of headline variations and choose the one that is the most embarassing.
When I saw that cover this morning, I was truly, honestly embarrassed for The Sun.
There's a Streeter coming up in a few minutes from a reader about that very cover...
Karen, the Sun has always been degrading Miller. Today's cover is small beans compared to when the paper ran a cartoon of him dressed up as a Nazi or something a few years back.
The Sun, I think, is just anti-government. No matter who's in power, they'll gripe.
So true. And you know what? Donato draws like crap. God I hate that paper. Looking at that cover today make me cringe in embarrassment for those hacks.
"The government won't have any choice, because at the end of the day it will be imposed by international standards."
So that's it then, sovereignty be damned and we stand on guard for, um, like, whatever.
