Blame higher rents, fewer readers or sheer exhaustion, but two long-time second-hand bookstores are closing their doors.
Bookninja gives us all the intel here:
Another victim of the rising rents on Queen Street West, and after 30 years on the street, Abelard Books will be moving shortly. Starting today, Paul Lockwood is having a half-price sale at his premises at 519 Queen Street West. Extended hours - 11-6 seven days a week. Also starting today and lasting for one week, Contact Editions at 491 Davenport Road (near Spadina) are having a sale. Half-price on everything with a regular price of $125.00 and under. Starting next Saturday, Annex Books at 1083 Bathurst Street will be having a half-price sale. Janet Inksetter will be moving to a by appointment and on-line business.
It kind of makes us wonder, how those fabric stores can stay in the black on the same block as Abelard.

Those fabric stores probably OWN their buildings, that's why.
The fabric stores have also been closing, one at a time.
I'm guessing they also move more volume in a given day.
Wait, are the closing or moving? Or does moving mean closing in the bookseller industry?
Also, there is no Fabric store with Heather Reisman as CEO, buying up all the independents and trying to corner the market.
Is BMV owned by ChaptersIndigoColesWBBS? They're moving in on Book City here on Bloor West.
