Toronto Overpasses Look Ok, Jane and Dave Talk Crime, Ignatieff Gets Ahead

In response to the collapse of an overpass in Quebec, the provincial and municipal government will look at overpasses in this province. They reassure us that none of this province's overpasses have the same design as the one in Quebec and are regularly checked.

Just hours after thousands of people stumbled home after looking at hours of art, 30,000 people take part in the CIBC Run For the Cure on Sunday. The annual event raised $4.5 million for breast cancer.

2006_10_2police.jpgBoth mayoral candidates talk up crime. Jane Pitfield even calls it the #1 issue in this election. Which only further proves that Pitfield doesn't know what she's talking about. Crime is down, there are more police on the street. We acknowledge that crime is an issue in many parts of the city but it's pretty clear, even to us, that there are issues more pressing this election.

Yet another MPP pushes for a cellphone and MP3 player ban while driving. We think the list should also include portable games like the PSP and Game Boy; because we bet some idiot has been trying to pass the last level of Metroid while driving on the Gardiner.

The names of 23 more firefighters are added to the memorial at Queen's Park. A ceremony was held on the weekend.

Ignatieff surges ahead of the pack at last weekend's delegate selection. Iggy has snagged about 30% of delegates nationally. Rae trails with 19% and Dion and Kennedy are tied at 6% respectively. We know it's a longshot but we'd love to see a Dion-Kennedy alliance take the leadership. Dion would repair the Liberal Party reputation in Quebec while Kennedy, would shore up Ontario and attract the progressive wing of the party.

I don't understand the difference between an mp3 player and the radio or cassette player as far as distractions go. I can see the reasoning behind cell phones, but perhaps they should be looking at banning all people from talking on them while driving and not just the less experienced motorists.

they mean having headphones on while listening to mp3 players, which is incredibly dangerous.

also, it really is about time to ban cell phone driving... my friend was hit on her bike last month. the driver was, not surprisingly, on her cell phone.

if studies show that cell phone use impairs you just like being drunk does, why is it legal?

this isn't an outright BAN, though, on cell use. it just mandates that you use a hands-free device.

I think the main problem is that they go in your ears and you may not hear crucial sounds that you would if just listening to the car stereo, like sirens, horns or a funny noise coming from the car.

The ridiculous mega-thumping car stereos are equally dangerous. You need to be able to hear a siren from far away, or a horn when the driver's immediate attention is required.

I was sitting on a bus and I looked out the window and saw some guy beside the bus reading a novel while he was driving.
