Say YIMBY

2006_10_27gladstone.jpgEveryone knows the acronym NIMBY (Not in my backyard) and most of the time this is all we hear about; community groups rallying to protest a new development going into their area. Sadly it translates into a negative dialogue of neighbourhood building and community development.
But what if some of us started saying YIMBY (Yes in my backyard), and looked for positive ways to improve the city we live in. The forward thinking people at the Gladstone are doing just that and hosting a one-day festival of neighbourhood groups and community organizations. With the municipal election just weeks away and candidates presumably listening to their constituents the timing of the event couldn’t be better.
Groups as diverse as CommunityAIR to Foodshare will be there. The event is free and runs Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

I’m pretty sure the flag is the Canadian Red Ensign, (unofficially) our country’s flag from Confederation all the way up until 1965.

In the interest of transparency, we should probably also mention that “The People At the Gladstone” are very closely related to / involved with Active 18, the group fighting certain aspects and negotiating or promoting other aspects of the impending neighborhood development in the Queen West Triangle, directly opposite the Gladstone. YIMBY is the slogan of Active 18, but protest is one of the things that they do.
Not that they shouldn’t. I mention it mainly for the sake of well-roundedness since this post somewhat suggests that YIMBYism is above protest, rather than inclusive of it.

When I first encountered the publicity for YIMBY, I thought the organizers might have really intended to address the troubling question in Toronto civic affairs: how do we keep a genuine concern for our neighbourhoods from driving us to make policy by NIMBY, effectively ceding policy initiatives to the loudest or best organized neighborhood groups. If I had any illusions on this subject, the inclusion of Community AIR dispelled them. Community AIR has one of the most absolute positions of any NIMBY or pressure group in this city. I have yet to see them say “yes” to anything they do not see as directly benefiting their neighbourhood.
