iPod Turns 5, Bay Street and Hipsters Unite In Celebration

102706IPod.jpg
Years and years into the ridiculously on-going debate over the legalities and moral issues surrounding mp3s, an anniversary is taking place this week: the iPod turns five.
While the Walkman had two types of users- those who sought “escape” and those who sought “enhancement”- iPod users have been seen to use the mp3-player for both needs, concurrently. (Ain’t that the truth, Toronto?) But Slate Magazine isn’t convinced that Apple’s gizmo is all that revolutionary. The article raises some good points, but you can’t deny the near-fetishistic place in our culture that the iPod has dug itself. I mean, c’mon- the Walkman never had its own night on Queen Street.
Anyway, there’s no denying that we’ve come a long way since the stereobelt.

I had an iPod since…mid-2002, I believe – and loved it instantly. Back then, you had to have a Firewire card if you didn’t have a Mac, and they weren’t being sold almost anywhere in the city.
    Then it died.
To cope with the loss and to tide me over, I got an iPod shuffle, which I dealt with for about four months before I bought a full-sized iPod video last Christmas. Words cannot begin to express how weirdly important the iPod has been for me, and how I could not imagine living without it. I had other MP3 players/music players before it, and there is just no comparison. There is absolutely no denying the iPod’s impact for portable music devices; it has become as ubiquitous as ‘kleenex’ is for tissue paper.
