Celebrate Day of the Dead With The RSS (and Torontoist!)

2006_10_23rss.jpgOur friends over at The Royal Sarcophagus Society are throwing one of their big events of the year on Friday. Join them for their fourth annual autumnal soiree Dia De Los Muertos, from 8pm to 2am at DeLeon White Gallery, 1139 College St. The night promises art, music, magic, tequila, dancing, piñatas and loads of other good stuff. There will be live performances by Kevin Quain, Mysterion the Mindreader, The Porcelain Doll, and others. It’s $10 for RSS members and $15 for the public. Tickets are available at the door, but Torontoist and the RSS have teamed up for a contest to celebrate the occasion.
As it’s the Day of the Dead, post your best poem about a dead loved one (Grandma, John Lennon, your pet goldfish that you flushed down the toilet in grade three) in the comments. The winner will get:
2 tickets to the event
13 Rooms October to October art calendar
Handmade Piraty Purse from Heretic Design
(Total value is $75, prizes to be picked up at the event only.)
Here’s how it will work: Write your entries in the comments, and make sure to enter a valid email address where we can reach you in that pretty ‘Email Address’ box when you comment (don’t worry – we won’t sell or share it with anyone). We’ll accept submissions until Thursday evening, and contact the winner at that time. The poems can be in any format. Someone please write a limerick.

I know that I cannot legally win this contest. But I really, really, really want to enter. So here is my null-and-void, unfunny contest entry. Surprisingly, I have no favourite dead person or recently deceased loved one.
Ashanti – A Two Piece Haiku
    Ashanti was hot,
Until she died, then not so much.
    The dead can’t be hot.
    Wait, she’s not dead? No?
Who was the singer who died?
    Aaliyah? Oh, right.

I once had a hamster named Hammy,
I considered him part of the family,
He ran out on the road,
When he was just 2 years old,
And was run over by a Toyota Camry.

There once was a cat called Brando
Whose namesake took part in the panto
    Together their size
    Led to their demise
and thus they’re immortalized de facto

Schmendrick was a birthday gift from Mio
Mostly black but his chest fur was snow white
His eyes were green and dumb just like the sea
Oh I knew from one look his name was right
I watched him grow to cat from kittenhood
And took him in to stay his lovelorn wails
But surgery was late I think he could
And did get some late night alley cat tail
I gave him to my mom to keep a friend
And lost him moving to and fro and yon
He grew fat and happy and indolent
I saw him at holidays at my mom’s
    Last summer’s veterinary needle took
This little friend, this magician, for good

Long will my dead dog rot
In an urn or a big pot,
In the forest or a thicket,
    Now give me a ticket!!

Here’s a limericky lament to a dead civic monument. And it was loved, oh was it loved…
“No bridge to the airport,” said Miller,
    “It’s too loud,” he said as its killer;
    “A ferry will do,
    It’s safe and fun too,
I’m sure the old Captain won’t ding ‘er.”
And now all we’ve got is a moat,
    With no choice but to cross in that boat;
    Still Porter took flight,
    With contractual right,
To ensure all its passengers float.
