Down and Out and Living in Toronto

ask_why.jpg
Those new Toronto Star “Why” ads are the best “slice-o-life-in-Toronto” Torontoists has seen in a while. A gay couple, the ugly art across the street from the Star’s own offices, rowdy soccer fans, sick beaches (or is that “beach”?) and a muzzled pit bull! Damn, they even have a shot of the slowly disappearing Regent Park in it! How summer of ’06 topical!
But the best shot is the last shot: Poor Siu Ta, still in her This Is Wonderland costume, searching the want ads for any new gigs that might come along. Bless her heart.

Me, I ask why a fuckn’ newspaper is grammatically incorrect.
Must be the edgy creative team being edgy.

Well, Apple was gramatically incorrect with “Think Different” and that worked.
I love these ads…I freely admit to getting sucked-into them. I also really loved the “Sweet Marie” TV spots for their “It’s Where You Live” campaign. It’s the one where the guy and the girl live similar lives and pass by each other all the time but never connect (the song lyrics say “like different phrases on the same page”). There’s a great 3-minute version of it that’s like a little short film.

I loved this ad. PLus, I’m pretty sure that it is grammatically correct. “ask why.” is in the imperative and does not need a subject to be a proper sentence. Of course, the a in ask should be capitalized…

Jeez Chrise. Grammar, syntax, whatever. The obvious lack of capitalization is what I meant.
As for Apple campaign, that bugs my ass too.
As for those short films, Marc, the Star got the ad agency to get allllll those directors and production companies to pony up the spots for little to no money. They got all kinds of PR, exposure (had a big screening party, online voting), goodwill and the benefits of advertising without paying a fair price for it.

(but I loved the film you’re talking about too)

The “Sweet Marie” film was directed by Yael Staav of local production company Reginald Pike. You can see it here.

i loved that show in general, but nancy was really the best part of it. i really wish she had been around more in season 3. it is indeed sad that she has to look through the want ads for work now. courage, siu!

I had to sit through 90% of “Dancing With The Stars” to get that shot. *That’s* Courage.
