Mayoral Debates Begin, Portlands Plant Moves Forward, Mystery Package Brings Flight Back to Pearson

Jane Pitfield and David Miller are going to be seeing a lot of each other until November 13. The round of mayoral debates has started and both of them came out swinging for their first debate last night according to the Star. Incineration and David Miller's record were two of the big issues.

Jane Pitfield's anti-panhandling bylaw stumbled yesterday when the Policy and Finance committee decided that the city should look into existing laws to curb aggressive panhandling.

Council is holding a closed-door meeting today to discuss more alternatives to shipping garbage to Michigan. They are keeping the details secret.

2006_9_19portlands.jpgThe Portlands Energy Centre keeps marching forward. Ontario Power Generation has agreed to buy power from the plant which means they can proceed with construction. It ties the hands of the plant's foes.

A candidate for the presidency of the police union want to enact new laws that allow cops to counter-sue for damages from false lawsuits. Many see this as another possible tool for police intimidation. They'd be right.

A school trustee is accusing the school board of running programs that have negligible benefits but suck up much needed cash. He'd prefer to see the school board divert money away from teaching assistants and lunch rooms to reading and math programs.

Traffic changes migh force a popular financial district food vendor to move to another location.

A suspicious package forced an Air-India flight to return to Pearson. Upon landing the bomb squad destroyed the package and said that the package was never dangerous.

Did you hear that Cowbourne has withdrawn from the election? It now looks like Moeser's victory in ward 44 is inevitable.

Wow, I'm shocked by the lack of replies. I'd have thought people would have something to say about the Portlands plant.
