Live Baby Live - Week of Sept. 11

Emily Haines by Carrie Musgrave

Well, +nurse is playing again on Saturday, @ Clintons. And we have brand new songs up on myspace!
http://www.myspace.com/nurseband

Everyone's future favourite band, STANLEY is playing this Saturday night at Revival on College Street - 8:30 sharp!!

www.myspace.com/stanleysound - listen and love.

good grief ... is there any mention on this website of bands other than indie hipster bands?

how about this month: the genius Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka (sp?), the monsterously heavy (and cool) Mastodon, the legendary DOA, or locals The Illumanti?

Um, Chris? There are a whole lot of non-indie, non-hipster acts listed above. Beyonce? Bob f'in Dylan? John Mayer? Read past the first couple of sentences buddy!

crap ... missed those, i guess. although, i think i just blanked out when i saw beyonce ...

i maintain that the indie/hipster band to non-indie/hipster band ratio is still quite high though.

Chris,

I have ZERO bias when listing music. You mentioned Illuminati...I have them on my list to add, but they're not playing until NEXT week (and in fact, I'll probably be there). It takes a lot of time to search for this stuff, and inevitably I miss listing some good shows, which is why I always ask that people add them to the comments. This is a WEEKLY listing, so unless the show was recently announced, I post it the week of the show. Oh, and I'm about as un-hipster as it gets. :)

Cheers,
Carrie

hey carrie,

my apologies. coffee hadn't kicked in yet when i started my half-assed rant against indie/hipster bands.
to help find upcoming shows check www.pollstar.com. they don't cover smaller bands usually (although the illumanit was on there), but it's a quick way to find what's playing in the t-dot.

No worries. I do check pollstar, but as you mentioned, they don't cover smaller bands, and I try to list a mix of both, so I check a number of other resources. It's impossible to list everything, though, because a) it would take forever to add the links, etc. and b) the post would be hella long.

If there's ever anything coming up that you feel is worth catching, let me know and I'll be sure to list it.

Cheers,
Carrie

righty-o! i understand.

btw, i checked out your website. love your photos. you've got a great eye ...

By the way Chris, I meant to add a stupid little ";)" to my message. It came across harsher than I intended.

Yeah, she lists a lot of "buzz-band's-du-jour", but since I'm secretly hoping that one day Carrie will bless my band with some press, I ain't complainin'!

Anybody else catch M. Ward last night? Incredible show. Two drummers!

Carrie is a hipster! Carrie is a hipster!

I know where you live, Gary, and I'm heading there tomorrow. :P

http://jam.canoe.ca/ lists pretty much everything, except maybe really tiny venues such as pubs, which sometimes have good bands playing (Tin Bangs/the Outfit at O'Gradys last weekend, and of course the Flaming Lips at Gabby's - but who could have known about that)

Thanks, Alex...I do look there, but I find that it's a pain in the ass that they don't provide ticket prices right off the bat. :)

Man, to have been at the FL show at Gabby's! Could you imagine Wayne rolling around in the ball in that place. :P I heard they got a marshmallow campfire, though.

Hooray for Haines! Caught her at the Gladstone on Tuesday and she was incredible. That gal can write- one has to give her that. The new album, "Knives Don't Have Your Back," is beautifully haunting. A wee bit too polished for me- I prefer the more thrashy Metric- but still a remarkable disc.
