Let's Talk About Weather, Schools To Go Scent Free?, AIDS Delegates Staying Put

First some bad news. Southern Ontario and Quebec are going to be affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto. The storm will be downgraded to a tropical depression but it'll make this long weekend wet and windy.

On the bright side, climatologists and most of us would agree that this summer was pretty good. Fewer smog days, heat waves and rain. It was a bit of a goldilocks summer.

The Star covers yesterday's four year phase out of shipping garbage to Michigan. They bring up some specifics, like the fact that dumping garbage is going to get more expensive due to the fact that dumps are at a premium.

The Sun sheds some light into that bomb scare that closed off Bloor Street for over an hour yesterday. It turns out that the man arrested for uttering the threat was a known "troublemaker" and that the incident may have been sparked by a dispute over an unpaid fare. The man was apparently drunk and fell asleep in the backseat. He would've had a rude awakening when cops fired tear gas into the cab.

School trustees are considering making schools a scent-free environment because of concerns over allergies and sensitivity.

The ROM is phasing out Free Friday Nights and charging $5. The last Free Friday takes place Sept. 15th.

The Post has more on two men that were arrested yesterday for child pornography. One of them worked at a daycare for over 10 years and the pair became roommates after trading pornography online.

Argos Lineman Bernard Williams was released on bail after facing sexual assault charges. He'll continue to play for the Argos and be back in court at the end of the month.

This shouldn't have been a surprise, but over 150 delegates from the recent AIDS conference aren't leaving and instead claiming refugee status. Many of the delegates are HIV positive but are also leading activists in countries like Eritrea, South Africa and El Salvador. We wish them luck.

Nice picture of the 'bomb scare.'

I think I will contact the ROM to complain about the free friday nights. That is a lot of fun, and it is right on my way home from work :). They are phasing it out right before they put the finishing touches on the Crystal too. :(

Whaaa? No more free Fridays? That's low. I'm complaining too.

Ah. I see now. The article says the $5 Friday special now covers any special exhibitions, which is a super attractive price considering the special admission can cost upwards of $18. And they're still retaining some free hours. Cancel that complaint. That sounds all right.

Ohh nice picture of the anti terrorist cops, I am so glad they are protecting me from surley drunks, I feel so safe.

I didn't even SEE them in that photo at first, hahaah. THAT'S how good they are at blending in. Take that, terrorism.

(Also, that 'staying behind' thing for the AIDS conference is terrific. I really genuinely hope that they are all allowed to stay.)

It's always good when you can find a housemate with common interests.
(I'm a bastard. I know.)

You want all the refugee claimants to stay here? One, you have no idea whether they are truly refugees or queue jumpers and two, if they are AIDS activists, doesn't this reduce the efforts that are being made in their home countries (which is hardly something you should hope for)?

I agree GeeJay. Doesn`t that also mean they came here under false pretences? And everyone go ahead and take cheap shots at the cops in that picture, but they don`t know what they`re walking into, we get the benefit of hindsight and distance. Takes nuts, pure and simple.

The problem with your love in with the cops is that they are trained in every situation to take aggressive actions. Ever heard of "Copping an attitude" I wonder where that expression comes from. But alas lets support the troops and the cops, because aggression and guns are the best way forward for peace!!!

"Trained in every situation to take aggressive actions". Wow, love to hear your source on that one. All I saw was a picture of cops doing their jobs and people being flippant about the risks involved, hard to believe where they get the attitude sometimes.

Yes Dave "Cops are trained to be agressive". Sorry maybe not in every situation , for example when they pull over a 18 year old babe for speeding and let her off in exchange for her phone number. That picture that you saw were they were just doing their jobs, lets examine that for a bit shall we.

5 ETF Cops dressed up Sci-Fi style, using tear gas in the middle of a downtown street, in the middle of the day. City TV, Star, even Torontoist are there shooting, recording sexy images of the cops taking down a man with a bomb.

But there is no Bomb, just some drunk guy being an asshole, but then again Dave the cops could of been in real danger, yeah and if they really, really, really thought there was a bomb do you think 5 Cops, one even without a helmet on would of been standing so close to a bomb.

It was all a PR stunt.

Sure let`s examine this incident in it`s entirety. The call goes out about a man threatening with a bomb, all this information received from a member of the public. Sitting here I don`t know the details, but within minutes all available cops, ETF, bomb disposal, etc, are sent to respond. Now, they don`t know if there is a bomb or not, we`re still talking about real time here. Somebody has to be the first ones to get up close. Remember we`re talking about a man and a possible bomb, so I`m guessing the ETF team will have certain members whose job it is to deal with the suspect, and others will have to ascertain the bomb threat. Either way, the man has to be dealt with first. I don`t know, maybe they had enough information already to determine they didn`t need to move people further back, I can`t speak for them, but somebody should be in charge of that other than the ones walking up to the car. I think calling it a "PR" stunt is a stretch but I admit to not having all the facts, you however seem intent on passing pretty harsh judgement regardless. And no, I`m not a cop, so this is all a guess on my part.
