We’ve Got a Thing ’bout the Post and Ring Part Deux

If the city moved this fast on every problem, Toronto would be a utopian paradise with no garbage problem, a huge island park in the middle of the lake, and a usable waterfront. But we digress.
The city is testing out modified bike ring posts at the South End of Elizabeth St. (right behind City Hall). The posts will hopefully be safe from vandals with 2 x 4s and will cost the city around $800,000 to implement on existing ring posts. If you use them, give the city a call at 416-392-8400 and let them know if they work.

    Hmm…that’s a way simpler way to fix the problem than I expected. Just adding a second ring, huh? Looks good and can use existing stock/molds with hopefully stronger new materials for future manufacturing than the brittle cast aluminum ring.

    The double ring will probably make it a bit more difficult to get the second bike locked up — often a tight fit already.

    _There’s another possible solution to be found at the Kipling Subway Station’s Park n’ Ride Pick-up centre. At this location is a series of non Toronto-brand bike rings.

    50% of bicycle thefts could be prevented if the people of Toronto actually gave a flying %$#@ and bothered to do anything when they see some thug with a 2X4 cracking open a post-and-ring. Please, if you see someone commiting an obviously criminal act have some decency and DO SOMETHING. I’m about to get all vigilante here and hide out it some bushes. care to join?
