TTC Losing Buses, Man Drives Off Bluffs, "Gardiner" Chris Gets Evicted

2006_8_23bus.jpgThe TTC is apparently losing about a bus a day to repairs and safety issues. Many of the buses are around 18 years old and nearing the end of their lifecycle. By next year the TTC will lose around 320 buses, more than five a week.

Toronto, York Region, and Provincial officials are lobbying Ottawa to pony up money for the York U subway extension. Many of them complain about the lack of help the Conservative government has given to cities.

A man drove his van off the Scarborough Bluffs yesterday in what may have been a suicide attempt. Fortunately for him a passing cyclist saw smoke from the bottom of the ravine and called police.

A missing U of T Math student's body has been found in Alberta. Robert Barrington Leigh was bicycling to the Edmonton Folk Festival when he went missing. The police searched the area for over a week until his body was found in the North Saskatchewan River.

City officials assure us that our pools are safe. Earlier this week Montreal closed dozens of its pools when high levels of bacteria were found in city-run pools.

Finally, police evicted Chris "Gardiner," the man who had been squatting beneath the Gardiner Expressway. The city needs to perform repairs on nearby concrete pillars. Seven protesters were also arrested.
