Torontoist Reads: Literary Events This Week

2006_08_20liisaladouceur.jpgThis week Torontoist presents extended literary event listings – you get till Sunday the 27th at no additional cost – as I’m out of town until the end of August.

Tonight, Jerry Schaefer presents The Flash Fiction Comedy Jam, which is apparently flash fiction read by a bunch of Toronto comics. Intriguing. Additionally, there’ll be a “live writing contest” and an appearance by storyteller Mark Jenkins. It takes place at Bad Dog Theatre – 138 Danforth Ave. – and starts at 8pm. Pay-what-you-can.

Also taking place tonight is Haunted Fishtank poetry and spoken-word night, hosted by Josh Haggarty. It also features singers, songwriters, thespians, burlesque dancers, comedians, magicians and more. I was going to invite you over for a Sunday night dinner, but I can’t compete with magicians. It takes place at the Gladstone – 1214 Queen St. W. – beginning at 9pm, and is free.

The next instalment of the Toronto institution that is Trampoline Hall takes place Monday, August 21. Misha Glouberman is our host, as usual, but Alex Pugsley steps in to curate this month’s lectures. Pike Wright will discuss her mother’s obsession with bear maulings. Flora Wood will discuss worksite accidents. Pazit Cahlon will lecture on smells. Get your tickets at Soundscapes for $6. Trampoline Hall takes place at Sneaky Dee’s – 431 College St. The show begins at 7:40pm.

Tuesday night head over to the Victory Café – 581 Markham St. – for the Art Bar Poetry Series. This week features Robert Priest, Peter McPhee (running unconscious), and Mary-Margaret Scrimger. It starts at 8pm and is free.

The Test Reading Series is on Thursday, August 24. There’ll be readings by Donato Mancini and Jesse Huisken. It takes place at the Toronto Free Gallery – 660 Queen St. E. – and begins at 7:30pm. The event is PWYC.

Poets invade Yonge/Dundas Square on Friday, August 25 for an evening of music and poetry featuring Paul Dutton, a.rawlings and more. The event begins at 8pm, and is free.

The Soapbox Readings Series takes place on Sunday, August 27, hosted by Paul Hutcheson. It starts at 4pm, and takes place at Not My Dog – 1510 Queen St. W.

And finally, this week ends with a special edition of the Perpetual Motion Roadshow. It features “rap asian-caucasian” CoolHandLuke! “Sign language poetess” Liisa Ladouceur (pictured) and “crafty cartoonist” Marc Ngui. The Roadshow stops at the Brigantine Room at Harbourfront Centre – 235 Queens Quay W. – and begins at 4:30pm.

Thanks for mentioning the Test Reading Series. Just wanted to mention that, due to unfortunate circumstances beyond our control, we've had to move this month's installment to the gallery space above This Ain't the Rosedale Library (483 Church Street). So, same readers, same time, different place. Sorry, all, for any inconvenience.
