McGuinty Has Personality, 1 In 25 Teens Have Brought Guns To School, Vigil Wraps Up AIDS Summit

Dalton McGuinty not only has a personality, he’s apparently been chosen “personality of the year” by a British investment magazine. Foreign Direct Investment magazine selected McG because of his efforts to promote research and attract investment to Ontario. It’s not People’s 50 Most Beautiful People but it counts for something.
Three student designers from the joint York and Sheridan design program have won a competition to design a mission emblem for an upcoming shuttle mission. Their design will blast off with astronauts and the shuttle Atlantis on Aug. 27.
The Humane Society has rescued 133 animals abandoned in a pet store on Bloor and Dufferin. Most of the animals were small such as hamsters, birds and rabbits.
The Sun reports on a study that finds that 1 in 25 teens in the GTA have admitted to carrying a gun into the classroom. 1 in 4 admitted to bringing a knife to school.
A Toronto-area tax collector has been charged with trying to steal over $270, 000.
Laptop thefts have businesses worried about the sensitive information left on stolen hard drives.
Finally the AIDS summit winds down with a candlelight vigil in Dundas Square. In a way the conference ends much like it started with crowds heckling Tony Clement.

    That Sun report is totally bullshit. When you interview students about stuff like this, they lie their asses off. That’s why studies that interview grade 9 guys find that 75% of them claim to have had sex, or why people who fill out surveys almost always claim that their family income is above $150,000.
    1 in 4 for knives? 1 in 25 for guns? Yeah right.

    I think I brought knives to high school almost every day I was there. Pocket knives, swiss army knives, exacto knives… some of them were required school supplies. Obviously “gun” is a less ambiguous weapon, but I’m still inclined to agree with David’s assessment.
