DFA 1979 DOA

Death From Above 1979's Sebastien Grainer and Jessie F. KeelerWhat everyone has been speculating for months has been made official. Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler a.k.a. Death From Above 1979 have called it quits. In a post on the group’s Myspace page, Jesse writes:

thank you so much for your support from beginning to end. thanks ache records for giving us that first 325 dollars and thanks last gang for taking us the rest of the way. thanks to everyone who came out to our shows, wrote letters just to say hi, baked cakes and made your own t-shirts. i kept everything you gave me. thanks so much to the kids who came really early to see us when were were opening for bigger bands… that meant so much to me. i hope i have been a positive example and not a bad influence and i really want you to know that when you stop me on the street and i dont know what to say, its not because i dont appreciate you, its just not something ill ever really get used to.

This is hardly surprising news. Jesse has been focusing on MSTRKRFT, which just released The Looks in July, and there have been rumours of the band’s break-up for quite some time. It’s still sad, though. Torontoist wishes them both the best.

    Shitballs.
Still, one fucking awesome album is better than none.

Damn…my East York address just lost all of its coolness factor. Damn.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like DFA or MSKRFTHRHASR (whatever)? They’re one of those bands that I feel like everyone loves but me. Not that they’re shit, or anything, I just can’t get into them.
I’m sorry that they broke up, either way, and that was a very nice goodbye. All bands should be so nice.

how many months before mstrkrft was just a ‘project’ and jfk’s new band is the big exciting new game?

Two albums! ‘woman/machine’ followed ‘heads up’… I only pipe up because ‘heads up’ is really worth checking out – it’s less slick, more raw, more punk. ‘My Love Is Shared’ is a great song. Yeah, the sex theme is pretty consistent through both albums… And now with mstrkrft.

David, I didn’t really like them either. I mean, I like the band’s name, and I love the album’s cover art, but I found the music really forgettable… I mean, it took me a moment to even remember that I’ve actually listened to the whole album beginning to end.
And, Deekay? East York’s coolness factor is assured for as long as you have Janet Davis, the very best city councillor, representing you.

Sadly, I am repped by Pitfield. And her being gone in a few months surely outweighs losing DFA.
