This morning's papers are split between a huge fire and carjackings. So first the carjackings.
A 44-year old ex-con known to police as the "Buggy Bandit" was at it again this morning. The man successfully stole a SUV from a woman. He proceeded to drive dangerously, flipping the car over several times and then proceeded to try to steal a number of other cars until he was stopped by onlookers and the police. The "bandit" faces 44 charges in all. He was apparently on the way to meet his parole officer, who's probably shaking his head right now.
A five-alarm blaze at a scrap yard in Etobicoke has residents and the ministry of the environment worried about nearby air quality. The fire burned for some five hours and started early this morning. A large pile of tires is also burning making the fire department even worried that the water they're using to fight the fire might not be safe.
Slow progress on the construction of a film studio in the portlands has the city peeved. Toronto Film Studios which signed a 99-year lease for a parcel of land is supposed to start construction by the end of this month. The company says they'll be starting before the deadline.
Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj has resigned as the Liberal foreign policy critic after his statements about taking Hezbollah off Canada's terrorist organization list last week caused anger within his party.
More Canadians, including one man from Toronto and another from Mississauga, have been arrested for allegedly smuggling weapons for the Tamil Tigers. What's worse we're expecting more arrests in the coming weeks.
The TTC is closer to signing that deal with Bombardier for new subway cars. After two positive independent consultations TTC comissioners have decided to go ahead with the deal. This won't make complains about the bid process go away anytime soon. The deal still has to go to a meeting of the TTC and council next month.
