Caledonia Heats Up Again, Bike Theft Woes, Search for Miller Foe Continues

A Superior Court Judge poked a pointy stick into the hornet's nest that is Caledonia yesterday. He ordered a stop to negotiations until natives on the disputed land leave. Native protesters have threatened to blockade the disputed territory if negotiations were stopped. Townspeople flocked to the edge of the disputed site where they were met by 50 OPP officers in riot gear. Native leaders, provincial and federal officials will continue negotiations.

According to the Star's Betsy Powell not even this bike, locked up on the ferry over to the Island, is safe. If it isn't safe to lock your bike outside of Police HQ on College street, where can embattled bike owners lock their bikes? She also reports on another scary development, are thieves using two by fours to break apart ring and posts?

Firefighters in training got a taste of the real thing when they had to perform CPR on a trainee who collapsed with a heart attack.

Is a Burlington man going to be executed by the Chinese government for suspected terrorist activities? Amnesty International thinks so. Huseyin Celil, the man currently in Chinese custody was an activist for the Uygur people of Xinjiang, China's westernmost province. Chinese officials deny that Celil is going to be executed.

City Hall reporters must be getting bored of this mayoral race. Not only is Pitfield's campaign going nowhere but now they're reporting on speculation from Miller's campaign manager that "powerful interests" are looking for a challenger to unseat Miller. If we hear the phrase "vast-right wing conspiracy" we'll laugh.

Lasch is scare mongering. Noone is coming into the race at this point. Camp Miller just wants some fundraised dollars in the warchest.

It's been impossible to lock up a half-decent bike for about, well, 15 to 20 years. One of the better defenses is to make your bike undesirable by customization. And use parts that aren't worth as much as well.

Still sucks, but until there's a better method of catching the crooks (a bike lojack?) it's the reality.
