Storm Hits GTA, Smog Hits Trees and Who'd Stab A Pregnant Woman?

While we were all asleep a big storm smacked around the GTA. Trees and powerlines were knocked down, Hydro workers and firefighters said this wasn't unusual for summers.

Apparently many area residents saw the fight that resulted in a boy being beaten to death near Flemingdon Park yesterday. Sadly, no one called 911. One resident mentioned that fighting was common amongst the boys in the area.

A fire brokeout near College and Spadina. People had to be evacuated but fortunately no one was seriously injured.

The city's conifers are being hurt by smog. Pines, firs and other evergreens lose their needles when exposed to pollution and other urban stresses.

The TTC wants to reconsider perimeter seating after the arrest of 17 terrorist suspects and yet another train bombing. The arrangement makes it harder for people to hide explosives and packages.

No free rides. That's the TTC's answer when reporters asked them whether they'd consider giving free rides on hot days. They just can't afford it. TTC Committee member Adam Giambrone said it would only be possible if the province or the feds helped out by ponying up some cash.

A 25-year old woman who was pregnant eight weeks was stabbed several times in the belly. She went into surgery and is listed in stable condition. The accused is a man who has been living with her for some time.

Two women protest investor corruption by making out for 45 minutes. I'm not sure whether this is the most sound tactic out there.

Perimeter seating just makes more sense. You know what also makes sense? Luggage racks above the perimeter seating. They wouldn't have to give up advertising space either, as Japanese subways/trains have both.

I don't think luggage racks make sense on the TTC; I don't like letting my bags leave my hands for a second on the subway. On a plane, it's a different story, but I wouldn't trust them not to get stolen (by, say, the person beside me, or someone standing during a busy rush hour.

I also think that perimeter seating is allright, though I like being able to sit facing straight out of the car. It's a better seat (more stable, don't have to look at anybody if you don't want to). Then again, I went to New York, and if I remember correctly the MTA uses perimeter seating and I thought it was fine.

There's an editorial in the Star today about free TTC rides ... why the hell would they think that a free ride on the TTC would persuade people to abandon their cars, even for a day?

The TTC is hot, and would be even more so with so many additional riders on that day. It's crowded, and that problem would again only be multiplied with a sudden surge in ridership. It'd be slow, since the TTC probably wouldn't deploy additional cars to handle the extra loads, and buses and streetcars might have to bypass waiting passengers.

A free ride might help sweltering pedestrians and cyclists, but no driver would ditch their roomy, cool car because of a couple of bucks.

Gloria, I completely agree. I was going to post "Gloria Wins", but...yeah, there you go.
